Title:International Research Ethics Education and Curriculum Development Award

Summary:The goal of this initiative is to support educational activities that foster a better understanding of the ethics of international biomedical, behavioral and clinical research and enhance the application of research ethics principles in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This program aims to increase the number of LMIC research intensive institutions that can provide advanced education in international research ethics. Education programs supported by this initiative will equip scientists, health professionals and academics in these countries with in-depth knowledge of the ethical principles, processes and policies related to international clinical and public health research. Programs should be designed to strengthen the critical competencies needed to provide research ethics education, ethical review leadership and expert consultation to LMIC researchers, their institutions, governments and international research organizations. To accomplish this goal, this FOA will support innovative LMIC master’s level research ethics education programs proposing integrated activities to develop curriculum, courses for skills development, including practicum experiences, and creative mentoring approaches.
Title:Development of a Time Release Study Methodology for Agricultural Goods

Summary:The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) seeks to deepen its understanding of the various barriers impacting the time it takes agricultural goods to cross international borders. Agricultural goods can take a significant amount of time to cross borders because of the multiple regulatory agencies involved in inspections; these time delays can lead to significant losses – particularly in highly perishable goods. FAS seeks a standardized methodology and metrics to measure the time release of agricultural goods across international borders. The methodology will be used to: 1) identify points of significant delay in the clearance of agricultural goods, so that FAS can work with trading partners to address these barriers and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of border procedures with the intent to speed clearance of agricultural goods; and 2) to measure results from projects that support trade facilitation.

Summary:USDA identifies Borlaug Participants based on country-specific topics of importance to international agricultural trade. USDA then places Participants with U.S. research institutions for 10-12-week intensive programs. These programs are expected to contribute to the strategic goals and objectives of the Participant and the institutions through a hands-on experience in a “real-world” agricultural research scenario, providing opportunity for application of research agendas where they can have a direct impact on food security and economic growth in an emerging economy. The selected institution will design and implement a training program to meet the Participant’s proposed research goals and objectives to the closest extent possible. The selected institution will also include leadership and communication training to help the fellow better communicate research conducted under their fellowship to policy makers in their respective countries to help implement science based agricultural policies.

Summary:The United States’ National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), and the United Kingdom’s Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), a component body of U.K. Research and Innovation (UKRI), are accepting applications for the NEH/AHRC New Directions for Digital Scholarship in Cultural Institutions program. Awards made through this program will fund teams of researchers and cultural institution professionals in the U.S. and U.K. working collaboratively to deliver transformational impact on digital methods and digital research in cultural institutions. Applications must be submitted by teams composed of at least one organization from the U.S. and one from the U.K., in which each country is represented by at least one cultural institution. NEH will fund the participating U.S. organization(s), and AHRC will fund the participating U.K. organization(s).

Summary:Mobile Health: Technology and Outcomes in Low and Middle Income Countries supports exploratory and developmental research to study the development, validation, feasibility and effectiveness of innovative mobile health (mHealth) interventions or tools specifically suited for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The overall goals of the program are to catalyze innovation through multidisciplinary research that addresses global health problems, develop an evidence base for the use of mHealth technology to improve clinical and public health outcomes, and strengthen mHealth research capacity in LMICs. In the context of this program, mHealth includes the use of mobile and wireless devices (cellphones, tablets, etc.) to improve health outcomes, health care services and health research. The developed or adapted mHealth technology can include external hardware or software components for mobile or wireless devices. New or emerging technology, platforms, systems or analytics should be incorporated. The current funding opportunity announcement provides support for up to two years (R21 phase) for technology development and feasibility studies, followed by a possible transition to expanded research support (R33 phase) for validation, larger-scale feasibility, and effectiveness studies. Transition to the R33 depends on the completion of applicant-defined milestones, as well as program priorities and the availability of funds. All applicants must address both the R21 and R33 phases.

Summary:The SCAR Fellowship Programme is designed to encourage the active involvement of early-career scientists and engineers, social scientists and humanities researchers in Antarctic research, and to build new connections and further strengthen international capacity and cooperation in Antarctic research. The SCAR Fellowships are intended to allow researchers to undertake short-term visits to major international laboratories, field facilities, and/or institutes in or operated by SCAR member countries, so as to become acquainted with recent advances in research and/or to develop long-term links and partnerships. Summary:The International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) program supports international research and research-related activities for U.S. science and engineering students. IRES focuses on active research participation by undergraduate or graduate students in high quality international research, education and professional development experiences in NSF-funded research areas. The overarching, long-term goal of the IRES program is to enhance U.S. leadership in research and education and to strengthen economic competitiveness through training the next generation of research leaders. This solicitation features two mechanisms; proposers are required to select one of the following tracks to submit their proposal. Track I focuses on the development of world-class research skills in international cohort experiences. Summary:The purpose of the United States (U.S.)-India Program for Environmental Health Collaborative Research is to stimulate and promote collaborative basic, translational, and clinical research between U.S.-based researchers and Indian researchers and to gain a comprehensive understanding of the impacts of environmental insults on children and adults across all organ systems (e.g. pulmonary, cardiovascular, cancer, and neurological disorders). The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) are interested in supporting collaborative research and research training through joint U.S.-India partnerships that address or seek to understand how exposures to toxic environmental insults alter biologic processes and are linked to disease initiation, progression, or morbidity. In addition, both agencies are interested in research that leads to the development of prevention and intervention strategies to reduce environmentally induced diseases. To promote these collaborative efforts from the outset, the partnering U.S. and Indian investigators must work jointly to submit identical applications to NIH and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), respectively.

The goal of this opportunity is to reduce some of the barriers that researchers currently encounter when working internationally. The ENG-EPSRC Lead Agency Opportunity will allow US and UK researchers to submit a single collaborative proposal that will undergo a single review process. Proposals will be accepted for collaborative research in areas at the intersection of CBET, CMMI, and/or ECCS with the EPSRC Engineering, ICT and/or Manufacturing the Future Themes. Proposers choose either NSF or EPSRC to serve as the “lead” agency to review their proposal.
