Youth Leadership Development in Nicaragua

As the country of Nicaragua progresses toward food security, an integral component is the development of youth as a change agent. There is a history of formal youth leadership programming through 4-S (a Latin-American equivalent of 4-H) pre-revolution in Nicaragua. Today, there is an interest in re-establishing 4-S programs in Nicaragua. The setting is a perfect opportunity to actively learn and apply knowledge of agricultural education and program planning/evaluation in an authentic context.

With the worldwide influences on agriculture in the United States it is important to explore agricultural education in International settings. The course is a traveling exploration of agricultural education and programming and the impacts of those efforts on sustainable practices in Nicaragua. Exploration will be conducted across the Northern portion of Nicaragua, primarily in the mountainous rural Department (province) of Madriz, and along the Caribbean coast in the Autonomous Southern Atlantic Region (RAAS) of Nicaragua. Visits will include interactions with several rural communities and schools in the region as well as visits to typical crop, livestock, and processing facilities.
