Global Scholar Certificate

Students who want to earn multicultural credit for a credit-bearing study abroad experience should register for the Global Scholar Certificate program in the semester prior to their study abroad experience. The program provides students with techniques to prepare for their program, to cope with challenges that may arise while they're abroad, and to make the most of their study abroad experience while they're there. It also gives advice for dealing with issues that may arise after their return home plus growing personally and professionally as a result of study abroad. The modules provide an opportunity for cross-cultural learning, making better sense of the experiences abroad, and further refining cross-cultural observation, adaptation, and communication skills.

The Global Scholar program was developed and funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education with input from students who have studied abroad, the staff who work with them, faculty who teach students abroad, and researchers in the field. Many of the topics dealt with are practical in nature, but theoretical and conceptual issues will also be explored. There are three separate modules designed to be of help to students depending on what stage of the study abroad journey they are in. Students must complete all three modules in conjunction with a credit-bearing study abroad program to receive multicultural credit at Texas Tech.

Global Scholar Certificates

Students who have completed the Global Scholar program may download the certificate from the Global Scholar website and bring it to the Study Abroad Office along with the module materials. Please have these materials in a large envelope with your name and "Attn: Whitney Longnecker." A faculty review committee will evaluate the Global Scholar materials submitted by students for multicultural credit. All materials must be submitted no later than the end of the semester after the student returns from studying abroad, following the timeline below:

Deadlines for Submitting Global Scholar Materials

Abroad in Fall April 1
Abroad in Intersession (December-January) April 1
Abroad in Spring July 1

Students intending to graduate in the same term as submission of Global Scholar materials should submit the materials well in advance of the outlined deadlines. If submitted materials are deemed insufficient by the faculty review committee, students may have to postpone graduation in order to complete the multicultural requirement in another way.

Remember: Students who participate in study abroad programs that are not eligible for pre-approved academic credit are ineligible to earn multicultural credit by completing the Global Scholar Certificate program.
