Global Scholar Certificate
Students are eligible to earn multicultural credit for a credit-bearing study abroad experience through the Global Scholar Certificate Program. Obtaining the Global Scholar Certificate does not automatically imply that multicultural credit will be awarded. The work produced will be reviewed by a committee to determine whether or not credit will be awarded.
Instructions
Students should register for the Global Scholar Certificate Program in the semester prior to their study abroad experience. The Global Scholar Certificate Program contains three separate modules designed to help to students depending on what stage of the study abroad journey they are in. Students must complete all three modules in conjunction with a credit-bearing study abroad program.
Modules
Students should review the guidance provided by the faculty review committee while completing the Global Scholar Certificate Program to ensure assignments are completed accordingly. The faculty review committee emphasizes specific requirements in the guidance document to align with the multicultural student learning outcomes.
Following completion of all modules and corresponding assignments, students should download the certificate from the Global Scholar website. Send the certificate and all materials produced through the program to Whitney Longnecker, Director of Study Abroad. Materials may be sent eletronically by email or submitted in paper copies in a large envelope addressed "Attention: Whitney Longnecker, Global Scholar Certificate Program." Note: Students should submit all materials produced including the info log, presentations, papers, etc.
A faculty review committee will evaluate the submitted materials and determine whether or not multicultural credit should be awarded. Obtaining the Global Scholar Certificate does not automatically imply that multicultural credit will be awarded.
Timelines
While there are no set deadlines to start the program, we suggest the following:
- Students studying abroad in the Fall should begin no later than the June before they depart
- Students studying abroad in the Spring, Spring Break and Intersession should begin no later than November before they depart
- Students studying abroad in all Summer terms should begin no later than April before they depart

Deadlines for Submitting Completed Global Scholar Materials
Abroad in Fall | April 1 |
Abroad in Intersession (December-January) | April 1 |
Abroad in Spring | July 1 |
Abroad in Summer (including Maymester) | November 1 |
Students intending to graduate in the same term as submission of Global Scholar materials should submit the materials well in advance of the outlined deadlines. If submitted materials are deemed insufficient by the faculty review committee and multicultural credit is not awarded, students may have to postpone graduation in order to complete the multicultural requirement in another way.
Remember: Students who participate in study abroad programs that are not eligible for pre-approved academic credit are ineligible to earn multicultural credit by completing the Global Scholar Certificate program.
Multicultural Student Learning Outcomes
When completing assignments related to the Global Scholar Certificate program or other multicultural credit requirements, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate intercultural awareness, knowledge and skills in written, verbal, and behavioral activities (e.g., service-learning, co-curricular and similar experiences).
- Exhibit the ability to engage constructively with individuals and groups, across diverse social contexts.
- Appraise privilege relationships at different levels (interpersonal, local, regional, national, and international) and explain how these relationships affect the socioeconomic and cultural status of individuals and groups.
