South Plains Community Programs

With the support of Texas Pride Impact Funds, the Office will implement two outreach programs in the South Plains community in 2022. All programs are open to the entire Lubbock and West Texas community. All questions may be directed to the Office of LGBTQIA.

Queer/Trans of Color Affinity Space

The South Plains Queer/Trans of Color Affinity Space is open to all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and/or asexual (LGBTQIA) and allied community members who also identify as Black, Indigenous, or a person of color (BIPOC). This affinity space aims to provide an affirming environment for community members to share their experiences navigating life in West Texas and organize ways of strengthening our communities.

  • March 16: Community Check-In
    • For our first meeting, we will introduce the space and discuss what issues are particularly impactful for LGBTQIA people of color in Lubbock and the South Plains region.

South Plains Queer/Trans Know-Your-Rights Workshops

The South Plains Queer/Trans Know-Your-Rights Workshops are a series of five workshops that aim to help our community members access LGBTQIA resources in the region. Below are our scheduled sessions:

  • HIV/STI Prevention and Care

    • Guest speakers: Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas, City of Lubbock Health Department
    • Description: Come learn about LGBTQIA-affirming sexual health resources in Lubbock! During this presentation, our guest speaker from Planned Parenthood will debunk myths about sexually transmitted infections (STIs), share resources on HIV prevention and care, and discuss ways to break the stigma around sexual health. City of Lubbock Health Department will also be available to provide *free* STI/HIV testing!

    • Guest speaker: Derek Mergele-Rust, J.D.
      • Derek Mergele-Rust is a Founding Partner at DebnamRust, P.C. and is an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Texas Tech School of Law. He practices child welfare, juvenile defense, estate planning, and probate law. Derek's child welfare practice is built around protecting the constitutional rights of parents and children in Child Protective Services (CPS) cases. He is appointed to represent parents or children in Dallas County. Derek has taken up the role of educating CPS, District Attorneys Offices, other lawyers, and judges on issues facing LGBTQ+ parents or children in CPS cases. Having lived in Dallas, Texas, for about four years, Derek is passionate about advocating for the LGBTQ+ community and active in leadership of the Dallas Bar Association.
    • Description: Adjunct Professor of Law Derek Mergele-Rust will share on a wide range of topics related to LGBT legal rights.
      • Name/Gender Marker Clinic: Learn more about how to change your legal name and gender marker on documents such as your birth certificate, ID, and social security. There will be opportunity to ask questions about the process in Texas.
      • Child Protective Services: Mergele-Rust will discuss the rights of trans children and families who have been impacted by Governor Greg Abbott's recent directive to the Department of Family and Protective Services to investigate families providing access to gender-affirming care.
      • Roe v. Wade: Mergele-Rust may also discuss the implications for LGBT community members should Roe v. Wade be overturned.

    • Description: Learn more about myths and facts surrounding gender-affirming healthcare, as well as how to access healthcare in Lubbock. The guest speakers will also share details about the state of access to gender-affirming healthcare for youth in Lubbock.
