College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources

The College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources recognizes scholastic capability as well as qualities of leadership, citizenship, and character. Scholarships are available for all students. Entering freshmen and transfer students should submit their applications no later than March 1 of the year prior to expected enrollment at Texas Tech. Most scholarships awarded to entering freshmen are based on entrance examination scores of 1110 or above SAT1 or 24 ACT and upper 20 percent rank in graduating class; however, some will be awarded with lower scores when exceptional leadership has been demonstrated and financial need is a principal criterion. Recipients of college scholarships must follow a degree plan typical of a declared major within the college.

The deadline for scholarship application is March 1 unless specifically stated to the contrary.

All college-level scholarships are administered by the Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources through the college's Scholarships and Awards Committee which consists of one faculty member from each of the six departments. Departmental scholarships are administered by the department chairperson through the department's Scholarship Committee.

UNDERGRADUATE

Agricultural Seniors Scholarship
For one student of each classification in the college based on academic achievement and leadership activities. Amount varies (4 awarded).
Established by senior agriculture majors.

Agricultural Systems Management Plains Cotton Ginners Association Scholarship
For selected majors in the college. One award of $1,000.
Established by the Plains Cotton Ginners Association.

Howard Alford Memorial Scholarship
For students in the college based on high school record, SAT1 or ACT test scores or GPA, and need. Number and amount of scholarships will vary annually.
Established by the family, friends, and cotton cooperatives of Texas in honor of Howard Alford.

American State Bank Alpha Zeta Scholarship
For the student in the college who has the highest academic record at the end of the sophomore year and who best exemplifies the qualities of leadership, character, and citizenship. Amount is $750.

Tom C. Barnsley Foundation Endowment Scholarship
For students who are or will be studying animal science, veterinary medicine, soil conservation, land management, or other similar fields directly related to farming and ranching. Amount and number vary.

Don Bell Scholarship in Agriculture
For majors in the college from the West Texas area. Amount is $500.

For students in the college who have an interest in soil and water conservation.

J. Raymond Boyd Lubbock Kiwanis (Downtown) Club Scholarship for Sophomores
For sophomores in agriculture who have completed at least 30 semester hours during their freshman year with a 3.0 GPA, who exemplify high qualities of citizenship, and who show that they need financial assistance in order to continue their education. Amount varies (3 awarded).

R. A. Brown Ranch Scholarship
For a major in the college who has shown exceptional leadership ability in FFA, 4-H, or similar youth organizations and who shows promise for continued future leadership roles in the agricultural industry.

Frank M. Carter Scholarship

R. H. "Herb" Davis Memorial Scholarship
For majors in the college who have substantial financial need. Preferably for an entering freshman with a vocational agriculture background from Amarillo or the surrounding Panhandle area. Scholarship is renewable if student is making satisfactory academic progress. Amount varies.
Established by the family and friends of Herb Davis, former vocational agriculture teacher at Amarillo High School and Tascosa High School.

Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Dean Jr. Memorial Scholarship
For entering freshmen from Dawson County and Cochran County. Based on leadership and scholarship with preference given to students seeking a degree in the college. Amount is $1,000. Consideration given to continuing the scholarship while student attends Texas Tech and maintains appropriate academic progress; however, application must be submitted annually.
Established by Mr. and Mrs. Bruce L. Boswell in memory of Mrs. Boswell's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Dean Jr. Mrs. Boswell is the granddaughter of Carrie Slaughter Dean and the great-granddaughter of Colonel Christopher Columbus Slaughter, pioneer West Texas rancher.

Dean's Scholar Scholarship
For high school students planning to major in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. Awards are based on entrance examination scores and standing in high school graduating class as well as leadership, sound character, and good citizenship. The Gold Award scholarship is a $12,000, 4-year scholarship and requires a minimum SAT1 score of 1420 or ACT score of 32 and must be in top 5 percent of class. The Silver Award scholarship is a $8,000, 4-year scholarship and requires a minimum SAT1 score of 1340 or ACT score of 30 and must be in top 10 percent of class. Both scholarships are renewable each year provided a minimum 3.5 GPA for gold awards and 3.3 GPA for silver awards is maintained each semester on a minimum of 12 hours.
Established by the college to reward academic excellence and to encourage highly capable young men and women to major in the agricultural sciences and natural resources. The scholarships are funded by various donors who are listed in this handbook.

Naasson K. and Florrie S. Dupre Scholarship
For deserving junior, senior, or graduate students majoring in the field of agricultural sciences who are bona fide residents of the state of Texas. Students must have and maintain a 3.0 GPA, be of high moral character, not indulge in smoking or drinking of intoxicants, and not engage in activities in opposition to the policies of the university or of governmental authorities. Amount and number vary.

Electric Cooperative Scholarship

For the college entering freshman who has the highest GPA at the end of the freshman year (minimum of 30 semester credit hours).

Mary Masterson Fain Scholarship
For an upperclassman majoring in the college with preference given to a major related to the animal industry or to an individual with a ranching background. A 3.0 GPA is required. Amount varies.

Gamma Sigma Delta Scholarship
For upperclassmen majoring in the college who have good academic records and who exemplify the qualities of leadership and potential for success. Amount varies.

Shirley and Mildred Garrison Endowed Scholarship
For undergraduate plant and soil science or animal science majors who are Texas residents and have a minimum 1100 SAT1 score or 3.0 GPA. Preference given to students from Castro and Deaf Smith counties. Number and amount vary up to $2,000.

Charles R. Gibson Scholarship
For students majoring in the college with a minimum 1100 SAT1 or 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to students interested in entomology or ag chemicals. Amount and number vary.

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Endowed Scholarship
For majors in the college who are Texas residents, have financial need, and good academic standing and conduct. Amount ranges from $600 to $1,500 annually.

For a high school student preferably planning to major in dairy industry or food technology but open to all majors in the college as well as to majors in agricultural engineering. Prefer a student from South Texas.

Gladys Manjeot Memorial Scholarship
For upperclassmen majoring in horticulture, floriculture, landscape design, botany, plant pathology, forestry, agronomy, environmental concerns, city planning, land management, or allied subjects with a 3.0 GPA and good character and citizenship record. Applicant is required to apply for the Texas Garden Clubs, Inc. Scholarship. Amount varies.

Dan and Julia Manning Scholarship
For an entering freshman majoring in agricultural sciences to be designated as a Dean's Scholar Gold or Silver Award recipient. First preference will be given to residents of Ochiltree County, then to Panhandle residents. See information on Dean's Scholar Scholarship for details on qualifications.

Source of funding is from various private organizations, federal, state, and local agencies. The amount and number also varies.

L. Edward Marvin Endowed Scholarship in Landscape Architecture
For any landscape architecture majors in the college with a 3.0 GPA or above, based on financial need.

Maurice Phillips Scholarship
For second, third, fourth, fifth year, or graduate students majoring in landscape architecture. Must have a 3.0 GPA, must be in need of financial aid, be of good moral character, show concern for other people, have an ability to communicate and work with others, be engaged in promotion of the profession of landscape architecture, and be an active member of the student chapter of American Society of Landscape Architects. Amount is $750 annually.

All scholarship funds are administered by Chairperson, Department of Plant and Soil Science. A scholarship committee consisting of three faculty selects recipients. All students who are majors in the department and who apply for scholarships at the college level will be considered. Students may also apply directly to the department. Donald Ashdown Endowed Scholarship Fund
For undergraduate or graduate students majoring in entomology. Based on scholarship, leadership, need, and interest in economic entomology. Recipients must have a minimum 2.75 GPA and must be selected by faculty.

For majors in crops or soils with minimum 2.5 GPAs. Amount varies, but a minimum of one $100 scholarship per semester is awarded.
