College of Education

Scholarships in the College of Education are awarded based on academic achievement, leadership, service, and in some cases, financial need. Applications will be considered for all awards within the college and the departments for which they qualify at the time of review. Amounts awarded generally vary from $100 to $1,000 based on annual interest accrued on invested endowments. All College of Education scholarships are administered by the Dean through the College of Education Student Affairs Committee, and are usually awarded by June 1. Applications may be picked up after November 1 and the application deadline is March 1. GENERAL EDUCATION

College of Education General Scholarship
For education students.
Established in 1985 by alumni and friends of the College of Education.

Mary W. Doak Grant
For senior female education students with a GPA of 3.0 or above who have been admitted to teacher education. Financial need must be considered.
Established in 1990 by Alpha Sigma Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.

Berlie J. and Laine Fallon Memorial Scholarship
For graduate students who plan to pursue careers in education. Amounts vary.
Established by the Berlie J. Fallon family and friends as a tribute to the former professor in the College of Education and his son, Laine.

Raymond Garlin Memorial Scholarship
For graduate students in the college at either the master's or doctor's level in any field. Amounts vary.
Established by Margaret Ann Garlin in memory of her father, Dr. Raymond Garlin, a former professor in the College of Education.

Roy T. Grimes Scholarship
For undergraduate students in the college with a GPA or 3.5 or above. Recipients must be Texas residents.
Established in 1996 by the Grimes family and the J. T. Hutchinson Junior High P. T. A.

G. Haines and Evelyn H. Grove Memorial Scholarship

Dollie Clements Harris Scholarship
For an undergraduate student pursuing a career in teaching. Amount varies.
Established by Mr. and Mrs. Richard Clayton Harris Jr.

Nadine Hinch Memorial Endowed Scholarship
For full-time students majoring in education with a 3.0 cumulative GPA or above based on financial need with preference given to a student who is working at least part-time.
Established in 1998 by Jewel Foster to honor Nadine Hinch, a longtime elementary educator who taught in the Lubbock Independent School District.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe L. Johnson Jr. Endowed Scholarship
For a student of any major in the college who has a 3.0 GPA or above. Scholarships will be awarded in 2002 and every fourth year thereafter.
Established in 1997 by Mr. and Mrs. Joe L. Johnson Jr. in honor of their children. Administered by the Texas Tech Ex-Students Association.

Helen DeVitt Jones Scholarship
For an undergraduate education major. A 3.0 GPA is required and financial need may be considered. Amount will vary.
Established by Helen DeVitt Jones.

Willard M. Kirkpatrick Family Scholarship
For a junior or senior planning to pursue a career in teaching. Recipient must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Amount varies.
Established by the Kirkpatrick family in memory of Willard M. Kirkpatrick.

Jerry and Pat Zimmerman Lawrence Memorial Scholarship
For two junior students with a 3.0 GPA. One student will be from the College of Education and the other from the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. Amounts vary.
Established by the Lawrence and Zimmerman families in memory of Jerry and Pat Zimmerman Lawrence.

Gordon C. Lee Memorial Scholarship
For undergraduate or graduate students planning to pursue careers in teaching. Amounts vary.
Established by Mrs. Grace E. Lee and friends in memory of Gordon C. Lee, former Dean of the College of Education.

Lubbock Woman's Study Club Scholarship
For unmarried women majoring in education, having at least a 2.5 GPA, showing evidence of financial need and sound moral character, and being from the West Texas area with preference from Lubbock. Amount is $600 ($300 at the beginning of the fall semester and $300 at the beginning of the spring semester if the grade-point average improves each semester until a 3.0 GPA is attained and maintained).

Helen Mallett Memorial Scholarship

L. B. Messersmith Memorial Scholarship
For a sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in journalism or English and planning to pursue a career in teaching. Recipients must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Amounts vary.
Established by the Messersmith family in memory of L. B. Messersmith.

W. B. Rushing Family Scholarship
For undergraduate students in the college with a GPA of 3.0 or above.
Established in 1996 by the W. B. Rushing family.

Ivy Green Savage Memorial Scholarship
For entering freshmen in the college planning to pursue careers in teaching. Scholarships are renewable for the sophomore, junior, and senior years if recipients maintain a 3.0 GPA. Amounts vary.
Established by Mrs. Betty Savage Mills and William T. Savage in memory of their mother, Mrs. Ivy Green Savage, long-time teacher and administrator.

Archie Sims Endowed Scholarship
For undergraduate students pursuing careers in education. A GPA of 2.5 is required. Financial need may be considered. Preference is given to students from Lubbock County. Amounts vary.
Established by Archie Sims in appreciation of the education he received at Texas Tech.

South Plains Foundation Scholarship
For undergraduates of any major in the college who have demonstrated leadership skills and show financial need. Based on service, leadership, and academic performance. Amount and number vary.
Established by the South Plains Foundation.

Southwestern Bell Foundation Scholarship
For juniors or seniors planning to pursue careers in education in Texas. The following factors are considered: first high school graduate in family, first college entrant in family, students with special skills (bilingual), economically disadvantaged, family disadvantaged, and specific geographic regions.
Established by the Southwestern Bell Foundation in partnership with the Texas Association of Teacher Educators.

Katherine Evans Walton Memorial Scholarship
For graduate students in the college who have been admitted to a graduate program. A 3.0 GPA is required. Financial need may be considered. Amounts vary.
Established by Katherine Evans Walton, a former Texas Tech College of Education professor.

Ruth Starnes and Frank B. Welch Scholarship
For an education student.
Established in 1985 by Sandra Kidd.

James H. and Evelyn Whiteside Scholarship
For an undergraduate student pursuing a career in teaching. Recipient must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Amount varies.
Established by friends and family of James and Evelyn Whiteside for their dedication and service to education in Texas.

Nat Williams Scholarship
For a junior or senior pursuing a career in teaching. Recipient must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Amount varies.
Established by the family of Nat Williams for his many years of service to education as a teacher, principal, and superintendent.

ELEMENTARY EDUCATION

Alice Maye Birdwell Memorial Endowment
For a graduate of the Snyder Public Schools majoring in elementary education who intends to become an elementary classroom teacher. A 3.0 overall GPA is required, and financial need may be considered.
Established by relatives and friends in memory of Alice Maye Birdwell, who was an elementary classroom teacher in Snyder, Texas, for 34 years. Forms are available through the College of Education.

Bernice Pray Davis Memorial Scholarship
For junior, senior, certification, or graduate students with a GPA of 3.0 or above majoring in elementary education who are planning to pursue careers in elementary mathematics.
Established in 1996 by the family of Bernice Pray Davis.

Christine DeVitt Scholarship
For unmarried sophomore women majoring in elementary education, having a 2.5 GPA and showing evidence of need and sound moral character. Amount is $600 ($300 in the fall and $300 in the spring if a 2.75 GPA has been achieved). Award is renewable provided no acceptable sophomores apply and provided a minimum 3.0 GPA is maintained during junior and senior years.
Established by the Lubbock Woman's Study Club Foundation, Inc., in honor of Christine DeVitt for her philanthropic contributions in the city of Lubbock.

Richard E. Ishler Endowed Scholarship
For junior or senior elementary education students with a 3.5 GPA. Amount varies.
Established by Mrs. Helen DeVitt Jones and friends and colleagues of Richard E. Ishler, Dean of the College of Education from 1983-1989, as a tribute to his contributions to the Texas Tech College of Education. When an extended teacher education program is approved, the scholarship will be awarded to an elementary education student with a 3.5 GPA in the program. Administered by the dean. Application deadline: March 1.

Fannie Pillow Student Teaching Scholarship
For undergraduate elementary education students with a GPA of 3.0 or above. Award received in full during student teaching semester.
Established in 1996 by Fannie Pillow.

Jean and Billie C. Pittman Scholarship
For full-time junior or senior elementary education students with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above who are Texas residents.
Established in 1998 by Phyllis Pittman in honor of her parents.

Dorothy Magee Sharbutt Music Education Scholarship
For juniors or seniors with a GPA of 3.0 or above majoring in elementary education with a specialization in music or majoring in music with a teaching certification and a principal interest in piano or voice. Applicants must state an intent to teach elementary music education. Financial need may be considered.
Established in 1992 by the Sharbutt estate in honor of Dorothy Magee Sharbutt.

Louise Van Horn Scholarship
For graduate students in the college who have previously taught elementary school and who intend to teach elementary school upon graduation. Recipients must have a 3.0 GPA and financial need.
Established by Beth Furgerson and Gage Van Horn III, M.D., in honor of their mother, Louise Van Horn.

Barbara Q. Womble Educational Scholarship
For undergraduate students who plan to pursue careers in elementary education. A 3.0 overall GPA is required. Amounts vary.
Established by Bill and Barbara Womble in appreciation of their education at Texas Tech.

SECONDARY EDUCATION

C. Jeff Piper Memorial Scholarship
For junior or senior education students seeking certification in secondary science.
Established in 1994 by the family of C. Jeff Piper in his memory.

EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP

Dr. E. C. Leslie Endowed Scholarship Fund
For graduate education students majoring in administration. Applicants must be currently employed by the Lubbock Independent School District or currently on official leave of absence from the LISD. Amounts vary.
Established by friends and family for Dr. Leslie's lifelong devotion to education. Dr. Leslie was a former teacher, coach, principal, and superintendent for the Lubbock Independent School District.

Morris S. and Palmer B. Wallace Endowed Scholarship
For graduate students majoring in educational leadership.
Established in 1989 by friends of Morris and Palmer Wallace in honor of Dr. Morris. S. Wallace, a former professor and chairperson.

SPECIAL EDUCATION

Hattie P. Baker Recruitment Grant
For junior, senior, or graduate students majoring in special education. Applicants must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA or above and show evidence of financial need.
Established in 1998 by the Alpha Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International in honor of Hattie P. Baker, a pioneer in special education who organized and administered the Baker Home and School for Exceptional Children.

Carmen Camp Scholarship
For junior, senior, of graduate students who are majoring in special education and showing evidence of financial need.
Established in 1998 by Frank "Bo" Camp in honor of his wife.

Caprock Chapter of TEDA (Texas Educational Diagnosticians Association)
For student's pursuing a Master's degree in special education with a 3.0 cumulative GPA or above. Special attention will be given to students in the diagnostician program.
Established in 1998 by the Caprock Chapter or TEDA.

Virginia Murry Sowell Endowed Scholarship
For students majoring in special education with an emphasis in orientation and mobility, visual impairment, and/or deaf-blindness.
Established in 1998 by friends and family to support the mission and memory of Dr. Virginia Sowell who was a professor of special education, a specialist in teaching students with visual impairments, and Vice Provost of Texas Tech.
