Employment

For students who want to supplement their resources through part-time employment while attending Texas Tech, two types of services are offered: the College Work-Study program for those who qualify for student financial aid, and part-time employment for students who do not qualify or who do not apply for student financial aid. These programs are administered through the Office of Student Financial Aid.

Federal College Work
Study Program

This program of student employment was established by the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. Funds for the program are provided by the federal government and Texas Tech for on-campus employment and by the federal government and the participating public or nonprofit organization for off-campus employment. Generally, an attempt will be made to place students in jobs which complement and reinforce their educational programs and vocational goals.

Eligibility requirements: Undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled for at least one-half the normal course load, are citizens or permanent residents of the United States, are in need of earnings from such employment in order to pursue a course of study at Texas Tech, are maintaining satisfactory progress, are not in default on any student loan made through or approved by any institution, and do not owe a refund on any grant previously received. Applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as part of the application process.

Student Part-time Employment

The Office of Student Financial Aid maintains a Part-time Employment Service which assists students in locating employment. The office provides a current listing of both on-campus and off-campus employment opportunities for referral purposes. The Part-time Employment Service as well as prospective employers require a personal interview prior to employee selection. Employment opportunities received by the office range from those which require no experience to those which are highly skilled and technical.

The rate of pay varies with previous experience and training of the applicant. Most employers prefer to have part-time employees on a schedule which permits them to work from three to four or more hours at a time. Students should carefully consider their course load as well as their ability to maintain satisfactory academic progress when selecting a part-time job.
