College of Engineering


Applicants for College of Engineering scholarships will be considered for all awards for which they qualify at the time of review; only when requested to do so should applicants apply for specific scholarships. Applications for entering freshmen are accepted beginning in the fall of their senior year of high school. Other applications are accepted year round with a deadline of March 1 for consideration for the following school year. Scholarships for entering freshmen are normally awarded by mid-April, all others, by June 1. Recipients are selected by a College of Engineering Scholarship Review Committee which evaluates applicants according to the individual criteria of each award. Although the exact criteria vary, most include scholarship excellence, evidence of achievement in academic and nonacademic areas, leadership, character, seriousness of purpose, and need. College of Engineering scholarship applications are available from the office of the dean.

AMOCO Alumni Endowment
For sophomore, junior, or senior students majoring in chemical or mechanical engineering with a 3.0 or better GPA.

BASF Scholarship in International Studies
For engineering students with a minor in international studies. Benefits include tuition, fees, books, and a year of study in Germany. Reasonable proficiency in the German language required.

Ray Butler Freshman Scholarship
For freshmen majoring in the college who have demonstrated scholastic achievement in high school as evidenced by records and scores on the SAT1 and/or ACT.

Ray Butler Freshman Engineering Endowment
For entering freshmen who have demonstrated scholastic achievement in high school as evidenced by records and scores on the SAT1 and/or ACT.

Roy and Ray Butler Scholarship
For freshmen who would not otherwise qualify based on GPA, class ranking, extracurricular activities, financial need, and moral character.

Raymond Argyle Carter Scholarship
For students majoring in chemical, mechanical, or petroleum engineering. An Ex-Students Association Scholarship.

Central Power and Light Scholarship
For electrical and mechanical engineering students who meet the entrance requirements of the college, who have at least a 3.0 GPA, and who have resided in the Central Power and Light service area for at least 3 years.
Established by the Central Power and Light Company, Corpus Christi.

College of Engineering Staff Scholarship Endowment
For a student in the college as recommended by a staff member.

Dean's Council Scholarship
For an engineering student with at least a 3.0 GPA who anticipates a graduation date of the spring, summer, or fall immediately following the award. Based on academic achievement, university extracurricular activities, community activities or work experience, leadership, and need. Amount is no less than $5,000 and no more than $10,000.

Earl Fuson Scholarship
For students majoring in the college. An Ex-Students Association scholarship.

General Electric--Steinmetz--Bobo Scholarship
For undergraduate engineering majors. Recipients will be selected on the basis of scholarship, character, leadership, and need. Preference will be given to upperclassmen.
Established by Melvin Bobo, a mechanical engineering graduate of Texas Tech, from funds made available by General Electric to recipients of their Steinmetz Award for outstanding technical contributions to the company and society.

G. Haines and Evelyn H. Grove Memorial Scholarship

Jim Gotsch Scholarship
For juniors or seniors with a 2.75 GPA majoring in civil engineering or a dual degree in architecture-civil engineering. Financial need may be used as a consideration. One $125 award will be given each long semester.
Established by Jim Gotsch, a dual degree graduate.

Halliburton Scholarship
For students in the college who maintain a 3.0 GPA.

Hunter Heath Memorial Scholarship
For juniors or seniors majoring in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology. Recipient must be a U.S. citizen.
Established by the family and friends of Hunter Heath, whose unfulfilled wish was to have obtained a degree in electrical engineering. Mr. Heath urged young people to seek education to their highest capability, and he provided tangible support to many in that endeavor.

Charles Ernest and Mary Ruth Houston Endowed Scholarship
For engineering and electrical engineering majors based on demonstrated scholastic ability, leadership, and character.

P. K. and Robert Koh Scholarship
For any student majoring in engineering based on scholarship, character, and need.
Established by Dr. and Mrs. P. K. Koh, former faculty members of Texas Tech.

Litton Endowed Scholarship
For freshmen in the College of Engineering. Awards are based on high scholastic ability as evidenced by ACT and SAT1 scores.

William J. Miller Memorial Scholarships in Engineering
For undergraduates in the College of Engineering.
Established through a $25,000 endowment given by Mrs. William J. Miller in memory of her husband who was the first Dean of the College of Engineering, from 1925-1932.

Mosher-Murdough Scholarship
For seniors with a 3.0 GPA majoring in civil engineering or construction engineering technology. Amount is $250 per year (2-4 awards).

South Plains Chapter of American Petroleum Institute Scholarship in Engineering
For junior or senior engineering students. Preference is given to students who are residents of the operating region of the South Plains Chapter of the American Petroleum Institute comprised of these 15 counties: Lamb, Hale, Floyd, Motley, Cochran, Hockley, Lubbock, Crosby, Yoakum, Terry, Lynn, Garza, Gaines, Dawson, and Borden.

Tech Engineering Alumni of the Metroplex (TEAM) Scholarship

Keith R. Marmion Memorial Award
For the winner of an annual contest sponsored by the student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers at Texas Tech. Recipient is to use the funds to help defray expenses in attending the state meeting of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Established by the family and friends of the late Keith R. Marmion, Professor of Civil Engineering at Texas Tech from 1955 and head of that department from 1963 until his death in 1968. James H. Murdough Memorial Scholarship

For civil engineering graduate students in numerical analysis and/or structural mechanics fields. National origin is not a consideration in selection. Recipient may hold no other assistantship or scholarship.

Dan M. Wells Memorial Endowed Scholarship
For seniors or graduate students demonstrating interest in a field directly related to water resources. Qualifications include demonstrated scholastic ability, leadership potential, and character.
Established and funded by family, friends, and students in honor and recognition of Dr. Dan M. Wells, who served as Director of the Water Resources Center at Texas Tech University from 1967 to 1977. Administered by the Director of the Water Resources Center. Application deadline: March 1. Awards made for the following academic year.

Department of Computer Science

ACM Scholarship
For students who have attended at least one semester at Texas Tech majoring in computer science. GPA must be 2.5. Awarded in the spring only for the following year. Amount is $200.
Established by the student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery, a technical society for computer scientists.

Computer Science Alumni Scholarship
For sophomores, juniors, and seniors majoring in computer science. GPA must be 2.5 or better. Recipient must demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to those with a GPA between 2.5 and 3.0 who are active in service or professional organizations. Amount is $200 to $500. Awarded in the spring for the following year.

Computer Science Graduate Scholarship
For graduate students in computer science with a 3.25 or better GPA. Recipient must have been admitted unconditionally into the computer science graduate program. Amount is $200 to $500, awarded each fall for entire academic year and each spring for the spring and summer semesters.

Computer Science Outreach Scholarship
For undergraduates in the department including entering freshmen and transfer students. Must have at least a 3.0 GPA at Texas Tech. Entering freshmen should be in the top 10 percent of their class, transfers should have had a 3.0 GPA at their previous college. Participation in computer related extracurricular activities will also be taken into consideration. Amount is $200 awarded in the spring for the following year.

Exxon Scholarship in Computer Science
For juniors or seniors who demonstrate high academic achievement with a 3.0 or better GPA. Awarded in the spring for the following year. Amount is $1,000.

Terry G. Myers Endowed Scholarship in Computer Science
For junior and senior computer science majors. Recipient must have an overall 3.4 GPA or better and be a native of Texas.

Clifford M. Parrish Memorial Scholarship
For freshman, sophomore, or junior computer science majors. Preference given to an in-state student with a 3.0 or higher GPA. Involvement in organizational activities will be considered.

Scholarship Promoting Advancement in Computer Education (SPACE)
For sophomore students and higher classifications in computer science. Students must have completed at least 30 hours with a minimum of 12 hours in computer science at Texas Tech with an overall GPA of 3.0 and a computer science GPA of 3.0 or better. Recipient cannot have more than $500 in other awards and must be a full-time student. Recipient must support and promote excellence in computer science at Texas Tech. Amount is $200 annually ($100 per semester) awarded in spring only for the following year.

UPE Scholarship
For sophomore students or higher classification majoring in computer science. Overall GPA must be at least a 3.5, and computer science GPA must be 3.5. Applicant must not yet be eligible for UPE and have completed between 9 and 15 hours of computer science core courses at Texas Tech. If only 9 hours have been completed, at least 3 more hours must be in progress during the spring semester with the assurance of the course instructor that the course grade will be an A or B. Amount is $100, awarded in the spring for the following year.

Weiner Scholarship
For students majoring in computer science. Students must be in good standing and have completed each of the following programming courses at Texas Tech with a grade of A or B and have an overall GPA for the designated courses of 3.667 or better: C S 1462, 1463, 2365, either C S 2450 or E E 3362, and either C S 3461 or 3352. Students must have actively participated in extracurricular computer science activities, such as serving as an officer or member of the executive committee of the ACM, donating services for tutoring students in computer science courses, being a member of the Texas Tech Programming Team, and/or engaging in other college or departmental activities. Students must be contributing to their own financial support by working at a part-time computer-related job during the academic year and/or full-time during the summer.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, interested in pursuing a degree in electrical engineering. Upperclass electrical engineering students may compete on the basis of overall college grade-point averages and participation in extracurricular activities.

For electrical engineering majors of all classifications. Recipient must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, a 1200 SAT, or a 28 ACT.

For an electrical engineering major.
Established by Chinese Alumni Scholarship Fund which is initiated and funded through donations by a group of Chinese graduates in appreciation of all the invaluable education and training offered by Texas Tech University. Application deadline: March 1.

William Peter Davis Memorial Scholarship
For junior or senior electrical engineering majors. Preference is given to students with demonstrated involvement in departmental activities.
Established by the John O. Davis family in memory of their son, a senior electrical engineering student during 1977-78. Application deadline: March 1.

Electric Cooperative Scholarship
For a freshman or sophomore interested in the development of rural America majoring in electrical engineering. Based on scholastic achievement, extracurricular activities, citizenship, and need. Preference will be given to applicants who are receiving electric service from a Texas rural electric cooperative. Amount is $300.
Established by the area electric cooperatives, and administered by the Texas Rural Electrification Education and research Committee. Applications are to be sent to the Texas Rural Electrification Education and Research Committee, Electrical Engineering Department, Box 43102, Lubbock, TX 79409-3102. Application deadline is February 15.

Charles and Ruth Houston Endowment
For undergraduates majoring in electrical engineering, based on demonstrated scholastic ability as well as leadership and character. A minimum 3.0 GPA is required.

For junior or senior electrical engineering majors who have demonstrated involvement in departmental activities. Freshmen and sophomores may be considered at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee.

For undergraduate students in electrical engineering who have demonstrated involvement in departmental activities and is a member of IEEE. Freshman awards are based on high scholastic ability as evidenced by ACT or SAT1 scores, character, leadership, and need.

Ken Taylor Jr. Memorial Scholarship
For a senior majoring in electrical engineering. It is believed that there is a need for recognition of outstanding effort among "average" students and this award will help fill that need. Selection is made by a committee of at least two electrical engineering faculty and one graduating senior. Award is made in the spring of each year.

Alumni Scholarship
For all engineering technology majors who are sophomores or higher and have a GPA of 3.0 or better. Amount is $600. Multiple awards can be given.

For full-time junior and senior construction engineering technology majors with an overall GPA of 2.5. Amount is $250.

Hunter Heath Memorial Scholarship
For juniors or seniors in electrical-electronics engineering technology or electrical engineering. GPA must be 3.0 or better for preceding two semesters. For U.S. citizens with financial need.

Johnson ControlsPigott Scholarship
For sophomores in mechanical engineering technology with an overall GPA of 2.7 or better. Renewable for a maximum of four years. U.S. citizenship required. Amount is $1,000.

National Association of Women in Construction Scholarship
For full-time students pursuing a degree and desiring a career in a construction-related field. Subsequent awards considered with evidence of continued need, interest in construction, enrollment, and good standing in a college construction-related program.

National Housing Endowment Herman J. Smith Scholarship
For construction related majors with preference given to Texas residents and Texas institutions. Amount is $1,500.
Established by the Builders Association of Fort Worth and Tarrant County in honor of Texas builder and developer Herman J. Smith.

Robert E. Patillo Memorial Scholarship Fund in Engineering
For juniors or seniors majoring in engineering technology. Based on scholarship record, character, and financial need. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Amount is $500.
Established as a memorial to Robert E. L. (Pat) Patillo, 1955 graduate and long-time employee of Texas Tech.

Al Sanger Memorial Scholarship
For juniors or seniors in construction engineering technology who have a demonstrated commitment to the program. Award is based on financial need and preference will be given to candidates who are working at least part-time. Amount is $250 (minimum). Multiple awards can be given.

Trinity-Murdough Scholarship
For seniors in construction engineering technology or civil engineering. Established by Trinity Industries in honor of James H. Murdough. Amount is $250 to $500 each.

Wagner Scholarship
For entering freshmen or students transferring from a community college. An overall GPA of 3.0 is required. Amount is a minimum of $350.

For one or more mechanical engineering graduate or undergraduate students who, in addition to scholarly achievement, have actively contributed to the department's sponsored activities and have demonstrated an interest in and loyalty to Texas Tech and the department. Recipient will be selected by the Mechanical Engineering Industrial Advisory Board or the Mechanical Engineering faculty.
