College of Human Sciences

Scholarships in the College of Human Sciences are awarded based on scholastic excellence, leadership, aptitude, academic service, and in some cases, financial need. Applicants for college scholarships will be considered for all awards within the college and the departments for which they qualify at the time of review. Application deadline is February 15 unless specifically stated otherwise. All college level scholarships are administered by the dean through the College of Human Sciences Scholarship Committee. Renewable awards require that the minimum grade-point average be maintained for continuity.

Departmental scholarships and substance abuse studies scholarships are administered through their respective scholarship committees. Separate application processes and deadlines are noted with descriptions of those particular scholarships.

Malouf and Iris Abraham Scholarship
For undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in any human sciences major with an overall high school or university 2.5 GPA or better and an overall 3.0 GPA on all graduate work. Students should reside in Hemphill, Lipscomb, Ochiltree, Wheeler, Roberts, or Gray counties. Academic performance, character, leadership, and evidence of financial need will be considered.

Nancy Jenks Arnold Scholarship
For undergraduate (2.8 GPA) or graduate (3.0 GPA) students in the college who have demonstrated leadership skills and potential for success as human sciences professionals. Number and amount vary.
Established in memory of Nancy Jenks Arnold.

Pauline Bean Scholarship
For any students in the college who have demonstrated leadership skills and potential for success as human sciences professionals. Number and amount vary.
Endowed by an anonymous donor to honor Pauline Bean for her dedicated service to her family and community.

Betty Bell Scholarship
For undergraduate (2.5 GPA) or graduate (3.0 GPA) human sciences majors from West Texas. Amount is $500.

Boeer-Wolf Fellowship
For human sciences majors of good character who have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Some consideration of financial need. Preference given to graduate students.
Established by Dr. Ilse H. Wolf, former professor of consumer education, in memory of her parents, Karl and Louise B. Wolf, and Mrs. Wolf's sisters, Misses Alma and Bertha Boeer.

Douglas and Angela Boren Scholarship
For entering freshmen majoring in human sciences whose test scores are 1100 SAT1 or 25 ACT. Amount and number vary.

Jack and Vivian Broyles Scholarship
For any undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in human sciences who has successfully completed one semester of study with a 3.0 GPA or better. Amount and number vary.

Edna Buster Scholarship
For undergraduates (2.5 GPA) or graduate students (3.0 GPA) in human sciences who have demonstrated leadership skills and potential for success. Amount and number vary.

Cagle, Cauley, and Coulter Scholarship
For graduate students in environmental design and consumer economics, human development with career focus on young children, and family financial planning. Recipients should be outstanding leaders with strong academic records, financial need, and outstanding achievements. Amount and number vary.

For outstanding undergraduate and graduate students with preference given to Texas residents enrolled in the college who exhibit scholastic ability (3.0 GPA), leadership, and/or financial need. Undergraduate students should be Texas residents. Students who maintain scholastic achievement may continue on scholarships until graduation. Amount is $1,000 each year for up to four years.

Lou Dunn Diekemper Scholarship

Kara Dunn Scholarship
For any classification or major in human sciences demonstrating leadership skills and potential for success as a professional. A minimum 2.8 GPA for undergraduates or a 3.0 GPA for graduate students is required. Amount and number vary.
Established by Mrs. Kara Dunn because of her commitment to human sciences. Kara Moore Dunn, native of the West Texas area, was married to the well-known Lubbock surgeon, Dr. Sam Dunn.

Electric Cooperative Scholarship
For a freshman or sophomore interested in the development of rural America and majoring in human sciences. Based on scholastic achievement, extracurricular activities, citizenship, and need. Preference will be given to applicants who are receiving electric service from a Texas Rural Electric Cooperative. Amount is $300.
Established by the area electric cooperatives and administered by the Texas Rural Electrification Education and Research Committee. Ethel Foster Memorial Scholarship

Elizabeth Imogene Tatum Memorial Endowment
For sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate students majoring in the college who are enrolled in at least 12 hours and who demonstrate financial need. Endowment used to assist majors through a special employment program in the College of Human Sciences.
John Tatum established the Elizabeth Imogene Tatum Memorial Endowment as a tribute to his wife in 1986. Elizabeth Tatum worked part-time to complete her education. She graduated from Texas Tech with a bachelor's degree, Home Economics Education, in 1933.

Dorothy Johnson Taylor Memorial Scholarship
For undergraduate (2.5 GPA) or graduate (3.0 GPA) students enrolled in the college.
Established by Dr. Haskell Taylor, retired Tech accounting professor, in loving memory of his wife, Dorothy, who was a 1939 graduate of human sciences.

Jewell L. Taylor Scholarship
For undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in the college who show dedication of purpose, financial need, quality of character, and successful academic achievement. Graduate students enrolled in the field of business or extension will be given special consideration.
Established by the family of Jewell L. Taylor, a dedicated home economist. Her first professional assignment was as a county home demonstration agent followed by employment as a utility home economist.

Ida Parks Thompson Memorial Scholarship
For a human sciences major who demonstrates interest in the profession. Recipient must have at least a 2.5 GPA. Scholarship is renewable each year if there is need and the criteria are maintained. Amount is paid from the interest income of endowment funds subject to funds available but not more than $500 per semester.

For any student on a competitive basis who has been admitted to a graduate program in human sciences. Based on a record of achievement for potential and future growth (3.0 GPA) and economic need. Amount and number vary.

United Supermarkets Scholarship
For undergraduate (2.8 GPA) or graduate (3.0 GPA) students in the college who have demonstrated leadership skills and potential for success as human sciences professionals. Number and amount vary.
Established by Robert Snell and United Supermarkets, Inc. in support of programs in the College of Human Sciences. Snell and his company are avid supporters of Texas Tech and the Lubbock community.

Margaret W. Weeks Scholarship
For human sciences majors who demonstrate good scholarship and financial need. Amount and number vary.

Wells--Derr Scholarship
For undergraduate students enrolled in the college; based on scholastic ability, character, potential, and financial need. Priority selection will be given to students in family and consumer sciences, clothing, and child development. A 2.85 GPA is required, and the recipient must be a resident of Texas and eligible to pay resident tuition. Awards are made annually and are renewable. Amount and number vary.

For undergraduates or graduate students majoring in restaurant, hotel, institutional management or food and nutrition with an interest in wine marketing or enology. Students with chemistry minors will be given preference. Awards are for outstanding students with academic performance (2.8 GPA for undergraduates and 3.0 GPA for graduates). Amount and number vary.
Established by friends and family of Clinton McPherson, retired chemistry professor, for his work in the West Texas wine industry. Also established in memory of T. V. Munson, an internationally known Texas horticulturist. Administered by the College Scholarship Committee.

Gary Owens Scholarship
For restaurant, hotel, and institutional management majors with a minimum 2.0 GPA. Amount varies.

Gregory James Pappas Scholarship
For juniors or seniors majoring in restaurant, hotel, and institutional management with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Recipients should be citizens of the U. S. and have a proven interest in a career in the hospitality industry, preferably the restaurant industry. Amount and number vary.

Marguerite B. Snyder was named a Distinguished Human Sciences Alumna in 1984. The scholarship was established by James L. Snyder, her husband, upon her death in November 1987.

Laurel Earline Weddle Scholarship

Laurel Earline Weddle earned a B.S. in Home Economics at Texas Tech in 1939. After years of service to her profession, she was honored in 1986 as a Distinguished Alumna of the college.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE STUDIES

A number of scholarships are available for undergraduate students of any major in the university pursuing a minor in substance abuse studies. For chemically dependent persons and co-dependents who have demonstrated commitment to recovery programs. Number and amount vary.
Eligibility includes regular and consistent participation in an appropriate recovery group; recovering alcoholics and addicts must have at least one year of complete, continuous abstinence from alcohol and drugs; at least three letters of recommendation from knowledgeable persons who can attest to the applicant's recovery and academic potential; applicants must meet all normal admission and retention requirements of Texas Tech; and recipients of the scholarships may pursue degrees in any program in the university. They must, however, be enrolled for at least 12 hours and take at least one course every semester in substance abuse studies, human development, or family studies, as guided by the Director of the Center for the Study of Addiction.

Mattie Smithee Scholarship
For undergraduate (2.8 GPA) or graduate (3.0 GPA) students enrolled in the college with preference to interior design-environmental design students and other students in the department.

For majors in consumer studies and management, family financial planning, consumer economics, or environmental design.

Pete and Eleanor Woodson Scholarship
For second semester freshmen or upper undergraduate or graduate students. Based on evidence of aesthetic creative accomplishment in the visual arts such as fashion, interior design, housing, or in other areas in human sciences. Recipients must have a minimum 2.0 GPA in academic foundation courses. Amount and number vary.
