Tips for proposing a Core and/or Multicultural Course for 2020-2021

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) allows institutions to propose changes to their approved Core Curricula once per calendar year. To make sure that our Core and Multicultural Curriculum is approved in time to be published in the subsequent year's catalog copy and available for students to view in time for advanced registration preceding each fall term, we aim to submit our proposed changes to the THECB by January 1 annually. The Core and Multicultural Curriculum Committee has developed a calendar that supports this deadline, which applies whether you are submitting a proposal for a new course to be added to the Core Curriculum and/or Multicultural Area or only proposing changes to a previously approved course. Please note that all proposals for new or changes to existing Core Curriculum and Multicultural courses must have departmental approval, college approval, Core and Multicultural Curriculum Committee approval, and Academic Council approval. For information on how to propose a new or change an existing Core and/or Multicultural Curriculum course, please visit the Core and Multicultural Curriculum website.

All Core and/or Multicultural Curriculum course proposals are launched and routed through Curriculog, TTU's curriculum management software. Generally, it will take at least one month between the launch of a proposal in Curriculog and its arrival at the Core and Multicultural Curriculum Committee or Academic Council step. This is because the proposal requires departmental approval, college approval, and administrative review prior to its inclusion for consideration on a Core and Multicultural Curriculum Committee or Academic Council agenda. Please take time to visit with your home department and college about internal deadlines that may affect this timeline before you plan to launch your proposal.

Tips for proposing a Core and/or Multicultural Course for 2020-2021

  1. TTU publishes detailed information about our Core and Multicultural Curriculum. Before you decide you want to propose a course for inclusion in the Core and/or Multicultural Curriculum, you should review the purpose of the Core and Multicultural Curriculum. You can find information on TTU's Core and Multicultural Curriculum website.
  2. You may choose to propose a brand-new course or an existing course for the Core and/or Multicultural Curriculum. Submission procedures differ based on which kind of course you are proposing. Take time to read the information specific to your type of proposal.
  3. Know your departmental and college processes! Your internal processes may add length to the general time that it takes from the moment a proposal is launched until it reaches the Academic Council step (for brand-new courses) or the appropriate Core and/or Multicultural Curriculum Committee step (for existing courses). Consult with your department chairperson prior to starting this process!

TIMELINE FOR CORE AND MULTICULTURAL CURRICULUM COURSE PROPOSALS: 2020-2021 REVIEW CYCLE

Proposing a new or existing course for the Core and/or Multicultural Curriculum, changing an existing Core and/or Multicultural Curriculum course, or deleting an existing Core and/or Multicultural Curriculum course all follow the timeline described below.

September 17, 2019

  • New course proposals must be at the Academic Council step. This is because brand new courses being proposed for the Core and/or Multicultural Curriculum must be approved as new courses prior to their consideration for inclusion in the Core and/or Multicultural Curriculum.

October 11, 2019

  • Proposals must be at the appropriate Core and/or Multicultural Curriculum step in Curriculog. For example: a course being proposed for the Creative Arts Core area goes from the department to an administrative review and then to the college before it gets moved on to the Creative Arts committee in Curriculog. Proposers should launch their proposals early enough to ensure that the proposals can move through the required steps and still reach the appropriate Core and/or Multicultural Curriculum area by October 11.

November 11, 2019

  • Proposers and submitters will be notified of the Core and Multicultural Curriculum Committee decisions.
  • Proposals requiring revision will be sent to the proposer (with copies to chair/director and associate dean) for revision request.

December 2, 2019

  • Deadline for submission of revised proposals.

December 16, 2019

  • Proposers and submitters notified of Core and Multicultural Curriculum Committee decisions on revised proposals.
  • All approved proposals will be presented as informational items at the December 17, 2019 Academic Council meeting.

January 2, 2020

  • All approved proposals submitted to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for review.
