Dr. Gottlieb is joining us as a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Texas Tech University. He completed his Ph.D. in philosophy at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and his B.A. in philosophy at the University of Southern California. His primary research specialization is in the philosophy of mind, focusing on the nature of consciousness and perception, with additional interests in cognitive science, applied ethics, and the history of early modern philosophy. Outside of his work in the philosophy of mind, much of Dr. Gottlieb's attention of late has been focused on how best to positively influence the long-term future---both in terms of its quality assuming we don't go extinct, and ensuring we have a future to begin with. This research has involved thinking about, amongst other things, existential risks, the moral status of artificial intelligence, the relationship between consciousness and being a welfare subject, disinformation, and space expansion and settlement.
