Matthew Pehl is a historian of the 20th century United States, with a special interest in race, labor, politics, religion, and culture. His current project is a social history of urban police during the 1960s and 1970s.
Pehl earned his PhD from Brandeis University in 2009. His first book, The Making of Working-Class Religion, was published in 2016 with the University of Illinois Press. He has recently published articles examining prison labor during the Great Depression and feminism in the Midwest.
