Yao Xu, Ph.D. is a lecturer of Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. She obtained her Ph.D. in organic chemistry with Professor Kevin M. Brown at Indiana University Bloomington in Jan. 2018. Her graduate research was focused on enantioselective [2+2] cycloaddition reactions between allenes and alkenes. She developed two catalytic systems that could promote either intermolecular or intramolecular chirality transfer [2+2] cycloaddition leading to highly diastereoselective and enantioselective cyclobutane products. She then headed to New York City and did her postdoctoral training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. During her time at MSKCC, she was working on the total synthesis and structure confirmation of bacterial natural product SF2768. In early 2020, she moved to pharmaceutical industry and worked as a medicinal chemist at Incyte Corporation. She was involved in a couple of projects while at Incyte working on small molecule drug discovery. Dr. Xu joined Texas Tech University in August 2021 and is excited to be a member of teaching faculty. She is looking forward to chemistry education as well as collaboration possibilities to keep pursuing her research interests in organic chemistry.
