When does Advance Registration begin?  When is my first opportunity to register?

The Registrar posts Advance Registration dates online.

You can check for your own personal 'first opportunity to register' by going into the registration system and clicking the "Prepare for Registration" link.  Be sure to look for the following:

  • Your admit status allows registration.  If not, then check with University Admissions immediately.
  • You have NO holds preventing registration.  If this isn't true, then start working the list one by one.
  • Your academic standing allows registration.  If not, then check with your academic advisor directly.
  • Your registration time ticket is already in place ... it will tell you when (exactly) you can begin registering.  If not, then check with your academic advisor directly.

If that doesn't work, you still have a few other options (offered in the order you should use them):

  1. Review your advising appointment documentation to consider the other course suggestions your advisor provided.
  2. Check with your academic advisor (in person or by email).  They usually know the ins-and-outs of our campus; this makes them your very best resource for a situation like this, provided you take their advice and follow it to the letter.
  3. As a last resort, you might consider approaching the section administrator of the course's department, or even asking the course's instructor of record.  You should recognize that this doesn't happen very often, and different departments will view this request very differently.  Whether they appreciate your initiative or are concerned by your boldness will depend largely on how you handle the situation.  Make certain you are respectfully requesting permission to receive a permit into the course, and be fully prepared that the answer is probably going to be, "No."  Remember, your academic advisor likely knows the details much better than anyone else, so make certain you didn't skip step #2 above.
