Research Interests

Categorization is a critical cognitive capacity that allows us to generalize knowledge that we've learned from past experiences to future events. My lab studies how people form and represent categories. We take a multi-disciplinary approach to studying categorization that draws on diverse theories and methods from behavioral research to computational modeling and fMRI. Our research seeks not only to inform basic scientific theory in categorization, but also connect to categorization research with topics in health and clinical psychology.

Current topics include:

  • How does past experience and context affect how we represent categories?
  • How do neural and psychological category representations relate to one another?
  • How does categorization relate to other faculties like long-term memory and object recognition?
  • How do category representations affect how we reason about and interact with members of those categories?
