Ben m. Bruckner has guided the family business, Bruckner Truck Sales, Inc., from a repair garage in Amarillo into one of the leading Mack, Volvo and GMC Truck distributorships in the Southwest.
"This company really endeavors to treat their people right. And that is a testament to their leadership, and to Ben," said John Huffaker (1970, BS Agriculture; 1974, JD Law), during his introduction of Bruckner at the awards dinner.
Bruckner's father B.M. "Bennie" Bruckner, Sr. opened Bruckner's Garage in 1932 and became a Mack truck franchise in 1948. Other truck lines were added over the years, and today the company has 10 locations. Bruckner Truck Sales, Inc. was named the distributor of the year for Mack trucks in 2006 and Volvo trucks in 2007. In 2008 The Amarillo Better Business Bureau presented Bruckner's with the Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics.
Bruckner praised his parents for teaching him the spiritual and moral values that have helped in his
professional endeavors. In day-to-day operations, success was achieved through frugality, persistence and giving great customer service, he said.
He also expressed his gratitude to "various people, many of these people here this evening -- employees, family and friends over many years, and they're really meaningful to me and I'm grateful."
Huffaker also had high praise for Bruckner's community involvement.
He served with Bruckner on the Amarillo College Board of Regents and saw firsthand how Bruckner brought sound business practices to his volunteer work.
"Ben served on that board of regents for 18 years and in that time period Amarillo College made amazing strides..." Huffaker said. "Ben was always our watchdog of finances. We'd get all interested in building this and having that program and the other program and Ben was always saying, 'How much
does it cost?' and kept us focused in our mission and on the things we needed to do.
