Rawls College Honors Distinguished Alumni

On Friday, September 30, the Rawls College of Business hosted the 2016 Distinguished Alumni reception. The Distinguished Alumni program was founded in 1986 to honor alumni who have demonstrated exemplary dedication to Texas Tech University. Honorees have distinguished themselves not only professionally, but they have contributed time, talent, and/or financial support to one or more programs that benefit the Rawls College. Distinguished Alumni exemplify the dedication and passion of what it truly means to be a Rawls Red Raider.
Congratulations to the 2016 honorees and thank you for the dedication you have shown to the Rawls College and Texas Tech University.
Philip M. Lang
Philip Lang currently serves as president of Texas Land Care, which employs over 80 individuals and maintains an active role in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the company. In addition, Philip owns and manages Texas Concrete Craftsmen, a specialty concrete company and Purtis Creek Farms, a grower of trees and landscape plants. He also invests in and manages commercial real estate throughout Dallas, with a primary focus on the Stemmons Corridor.
Philip graduated with honors from Texas Tech and was active in the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. Upon graduation, he accepted a position with Bank of America as an analyst in the Corporate Real Estate Group. He was later transferred to the Syndicated Capital Markets Group with Bank of America Securities. Philip left the finance arena to work for Turfgrass America for a short stint before returning to his entrepreneurial roots and forming Texas Land Care in early 2003.
Philip currently serves on the Board of the Stemmons Corridor Business Association. From 2006-13 he was a member of the Advisory Board for the Texas Tech Rawls College of Business. He was involved with the steering committee of the Rawls College of Business Annual Dallas Scholarship Fundraising Event from 2002-15, in addition to serving as Chair or Co-Chair from 2010-15.
Joel W. Reese
After graduating from Texas Tech's School of Law in 1993, Joel Reese practiced law for two years in Beaumont before moving to Dallas in 1995. In 2000, he joined Winstead, Sechrest & Minick, a large Dallas-based law firm, where he later became an equity partner. In 2011, Joel left Winstead to start Reese Gordon Marketos, LLP with Brad Gordon from Winstead and Pete Marketos from Haynes and Boone, LLP. In 2013, after large wins in 2012, the Texas Lawyer recognized RGM as the top trial law boutique in Texas.
Over the last several years, Joel has won many high-profile cases. While at Winstead, Joel and his close friend and fellow Texas Tech alumni David Brown were responsible for winning an eight-year multi-billion dollar class action that was featured on CBS Nightly News with Dan Rather. In 2010, Joel won a defense verdict in a two-week jury trial over a commercial real estate development in Vail, Colorado. In 2012, Joel won a high profile $33 million case filed by billionaire T. Boone Pickens that was featured in BusinessWeek. In 2013, Uber Technologies hired Joel to represent their drivers against an effort by the City of Dallas to ban Uber from Dallas. In 2015, Joel won a $6.2 million securities jury verdict after a three-week jury trial that was featured in the Dallas Morning News. Several of Joel's cases have reached the Texas Supreme Court and changed the law on issues ranging from class actions to electronic discovery to the law of nuisance.
Joel has been active in the Rawls College of Business for many years. He has been a member of the Rawls College Advisory Committee since 2009 and has served as chairman of the Advisory Committee since 2014. He has served as a member of the Dallas Scholarship Fundraising Steering Committee and currently is a member of the search committee for the Dean of the Rawls College. During his time as a student, Joel was president of the Finance Association, the largest student organization in the Rawls College at the time, and treasurer of the Delta Chi Fraternity.
Dory A. Wiley
Dory A. Wiley - CFA, CPA, CVA - is president and CEO of Commerce Street Holdings, LLC; the holding company for Commerce Street Capital (CSC), LLC, a FINRA-regulated broker/dealer; and Commerce Street Investment Management (CSIM), LLC, an SEC-registered investment adviser. Since co-founding the firm in 2007, his primary focus has been the management and growth of the broker dealer and the creation of investment funds that specialize in financial institutions and related products.
Dory serves on the Boards and Investment Committees of CSIM's investment funds. Those funds have included SBICs (Independent Bankers Capital Fund), Bank Hedge, and Private Equity funds and debt funds. He formerly served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas, an approximately $100 billion pension fund where he was chairman of the Investment Committee; chaired the Alternative Assets Committee; and served on Compensation, CIO Recruiting, Audit, and Government Committees.
Dory has over 25 years of experience in commercial and investment banking and investment management. Prior to his current position with Commerce Street, Dory was president of SAMCO Capital Markets, LLC, which he joined in 1996. Before, SAMCO, he was vice president and manager of the Financial Institutions Group at Rauscher Pierce Refsnes, now RBC Capital Markets.
Dory has also been an advisory board member to numerous small banks throughout the country. He is a member of the AICPA, Texas Society of CPAs, the Dallas Society of Financial Analysts, the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts, and the CFA Institute. He is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors, and has served on several charitable or advisory boards including: Texas Tech Red Raider Club, the Rawls College of Business, the Texas Tech Foundation Board, the Baylor Health Care Systems Foundation, the Cotton Bowl Committee, the SMU Cox School of Business mentor board, and the Lee Park & Arlington Hall Conservancy Board, among others.This supports the efforts outlined in the Rawls College of Business Strategic Plan.
