Scott Sureddin, CEO of DHL Supply Chain North America, recently visited the Rawls College to talk with students about his experience in the supply chain industry. While earning his B.B.A. in Marketing from the Rawls College, Sureddin worked in a warehouse. This experience taught him the importance of supply chain in any business industry. Upon graduating in 1987, he applied solely for supply chain positions. He started with Kraft Foods and eventually moved to DHL, where he worked his way up to CEO.
Drawing on his experience with DHL, Sureddin discussed the three pillars for DHL's strategic plan to 2020. One main focus is on best practices - being the best means practicing the best methods. Another goal is to connect with current and prospective employees, making your company the employer of choice. Lastly, always be willing to grow and develop. Identify new skills or technology and master them. Adaptation is key to becoming successful and maintaining that level of competence. For DHL, the goal is to provide solutions across the entire supply chain realm, and that is only possible by implementing these three strategies.
On a personal level, Sureddin says there are a number of characteristics that are important to be successful in the industry. Be down to earth, surround yourself with good people, understand that people matter, maintain a great work ethic and drive to succeed, don't be afraid to get out of your comfort zone and create a work-life balance that works for you. These qualities will not only help you become successful post-graduation, but they will also help create an enjoyable environment in which to work. Ultimately, enjoying what you do will ensure a great work ethic, which will lead to success. Don't be afraid to move around and attempt different things to find the best situation for you.
"Scott Sureddin's visit with the supply chain management students was fantastic. As a graduate of the Rawls College, he was able to share his career path with the students and offer beneficial words of advice and encouragement. He also brought several members of his DHL Supply Chain team with him and the students were able to network with all of these experienced industry professionals. From a faculty perspective, Mr. Sureddin's visit reinforced concepts that we address in the supply chain courses that enable the students feel confident that their education is preparing them to be impactful supply chain managers after they graduate. We look forward to continuing to grow our partnership with DHL Supply Chain," Professor Stephanie Thomas said.
