Staff Awards

The Distinguished Staff Awards acknowledge and honor the achievements of Texas Tech University and Texas Tech University System non-faculty, benefits-eligible employees. There are five levels of awards given out annually: the Matador Award, the Masked Rider Award, the Guns Up Award, the President's Award of Excellence and the Chancellor's Award of Excellence.

This year, there were more than 200 nominations recognizing 185 employees. The Rawls College had two employees who will receive these prestigious awards this year. Laura Sanders, director of Career Services at the Career Management Center (CMC), will receive the Masked Rider Award, which is given to an individual who has three or more years of service and at least one year in a supervisory position. Kathy Suchy, Information Technology (IT) director of Business Administration Computing Services (BACS), will receive the Chancellor's Award of Excellence, which recognizes an individual with five or more years of service with Texas Tech University.

Award recipients will be honored on Nov. 2 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Red Raider Ballroom located in the Student Union Building at Texas Tech.

Laura SandersLaura Sanders has been the Director of Career Services at the CMC for two and a half years. In her role, she plans the Rawls Career Fair every fall and spring semester, recruits and maintains employers for the Rawls CMC Corporate Sponsor program and assists in planning and facilitating the Rawls Executive Mentor Program. "I am truly honored to be selected for the Masked Rider Award," Sanders said. "The Rawls College of Business and the CMC have been a huge blessing in my life, and I am so thankful for everyone I work with. The students, faculty and staff are why I love my job! I work with an amazing staff here in the CMC that make it fun to be creative and innovative in our approach to help students Prep, Connect, Get Hired, and Succeed. I look forward to many more years here at the Rawls College."

Kathy Suchy

Kathy Suchy has been the IT Director of BACS since 2013. Suchy manages Rawls College's BACS staff members and oversees technology and technical services at the Rawls College of Business. With the help of the BACS staff, she researches, purchases, specifies and maintains IT software and hardware solutions for the college. BACS also provides technology assistance to more than 4,000 students taking classes in the building each semester. Suchy's first role as the multimedia specialist in BACS at Texas Tech started in 1998. Her skills developed in other IT areas through a close association with Tech Services and System Administration teams in BACS. In the early 2000s, she was promoted to associate director of computing, where her main role was to be the user services manager.

"I am thrilled beyond measure and humbled beyond words over this incredible honor," Suchy said. "I must note, however, that any award I am able to enjoy is a direct result of the commitment to excellence that motivates each and every one of my BACS colleagues. They make me look good! Their expertise, passion and dedication inspires me each and every day. Additionally, it takes strong leadership (from forward-thinking faculty and staff, to courageous and innovative administrative leaders, to sharp-penciled financial officers who know how to leverage existing resources) to make a college like the Rawls College shine with regard to technology. I'm just so proud to be a part of it, and so grateful to be nominated for such an esteemed award."
