About

James R. Burns is a full professor of operations management and information technology in the Rawls College of Business Administration at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas. He received his MS and PhD degrees in operations research from Purdue University. He holds the PMP and CIRM certifications provided by the Project Management Institute and the American Production and Inventory Control Society. He is the author or co-author of several books on management science and information technology and more than 100 journal articles and published presentations. He regularly teaches courses in operations management and project management.

Burns' research is focused on new developments in project/process management and on understanding the dynamics of oil and gas production in the Permian Basin. He is interested in the synergistic use of concepts borrowed from Boehm, Covey, Crosby, Deming, Forrester, Goldratt, Hammer, Humphreys, Senge and others in the design of processes. Currently, he is focused on improving the methods/models IT teams use to develop software products. He also enjoys using simulation and other tools to garner new knowledge about the dynamics of processes, particularly supply chains.
