Math Placement Exam
The Mathematics Department has a Placement Exam that all students must take before they are allowed to register for certain Math courses. The MPE is important because it helps your advisor determine which mathematics course you should take and is extremely important for scheduling your courses.
The Mathematics Placement Examination can be completed on-line by all entering students prior to coming to Texas Tech.

University policy states that to be admitted to certain entry-level mathematics course (1331, 1350, 1451, 2345), a student must meet one of the following prerequisites:
- Students who have a sufficiently high SAT Mathematics score or ACT Mathematics score may enroll in any of these entry-level courses.
- Students who have collegiate credit for the appropriate prerequisite course from Texas Tech or an accredited community college, junior college or university may enroll in the sequelled entry-level mathematics course.
- Students who satisfactorily pass the Mathematics Placement Examination may enroll in the appropriate entry-level mathematics course.
For many students, achieving a satisfactory score on the Mathematics Placement Examination is the most direct and effective way to satisfy one of these prerequisites. The placement examination has one goal: to place the student in the course which best matches the student's university major and the student's skill level. The examination directs the student to the course he or she wishes to take or to a course which develops the necessary prerequisite skills for the required courses in his or her degree program.
Do I need to take the Math Placement Exam?
The Mathematics Placement Exam is strongly recommended for all undergraduate students. The Core Curriculum Requirement which applies to all undergraduate students regardless of their major or college includes 6 hours of Mathematics. Most of the courses that can be used to satisfy this requirement demand some basic skills in Mathematics, particularly Algebra.
Even if a student needs to take a course for which the Placement Exam cannot be used as a prerequisite, the Exam can provide valuable information as to whether a student is ready for a particular course.
