What is University Convocation?

Convocation is a time to celebrate. We celebrate the excitement of a new academic year as we welcome you.

Just as Commencement is a ceremony that marks the completion of study, University Convocation celebrates a student's entry into higher education. It is also one of the first events presenting the new class of students to the President, Texas Tech administrators and professors. The convocation speaker will offer inspiring words to set you on your new course of academic discovery.

Why is Convocation important?

Why do we have convocation and commencement ceremonies? What ultimate purpose do they serve?

We all know the importance of punctuation. Periods (.), commas (,), quotation marks (" "), question marks (?), and other punctuation marks give clarity and meaning to a phrase or a sentence.  Commencement exercises and new student convocations are like punctuation points – symmetrical points that form the boundaries of your academic experience, and in doing so contribute an essential element to its meaning.

Thus, commencement and convocation ceremonies are an important means by which the four years of college are shaped into and become an experience.

Becoming part of the university community is an exciting event in a student's life, and the role of University Convocation is to celebrate that moment.  We have these moments to symbolically mark the beginning and end of your academic career.  Our hope is that University Convocation will motivate you to write an exciting and inspiring middle to your college story.

Who attends?

All new students are invited to attend University Convocation. Additionally, all Texas Tech faculty, staff and current students are invited to greet and welcome the incoming class.

The presenters for the evening will be the University President, SGA President and a keynote speaker.
