June 13, 2012

Texas Tech University Independent School District (TTUISD) has named Jim Taliaferro, Ed.D, as their new superintendent. In January 2012, Taliaferro announced his retirement from Slaton ISD, where he served as superintendent for seven years. He will begin serving as the TTUISD superintendent on August 1, 2012.

Taliaferro received his Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music Education degrees from Wichita State University. He then went on to earn his Master of Education degree from West Texas State University, and in 2009, Taliaferro completed his Doctorate of Education at Texas Tech University.

Before working at Slaton ISD, Taliaferro served as the Director of Instrumental Music for grades 5-12 and the assistant high school girls basketball coach in Sublette, Kansas. He then moved to Texas and worked at Gruver ISD for three years. During his time at Gruver ISD, he served as the Director of Instrumental Music for grades 6-12 and the choir director for grades 9-12. After leaving Gruver ISD, he went to work for Stratford ISD in Stratford, Texas. There, he served as the Director of Junior High Instrumental Music and the Assistant Director for High School Instrumental Music. He then worked as Stratford ISD’s Elementary and Middle School Principal. Taliaferro finished his final five years at Stratford ISD as Superintendent of Schools. In 2003, Stratford ISD was recognized as an exemplary school district by the Texas Education Association.

During his tenure at Slaton ISD, the district was designated as a TEA Recognized District in 2009 and 2010, and Slaton High School was designated as a 2008 USDE Blue Ribbon High School. In 2010, Taliaferro was awarded the “Slaton Man of the Year” award, and in 2009 he was named Slaton’s “Boss of the Year.”

As TTUISD’s superintendent, Taliaferro will work to develop strong programs that are well recognized and respected. He will represent the TTUISD schools in the accreditation process to ensure compliance with the State of Texas’ education codes and rules. Taliaferro will also serve as the supervisor for the two TTUISD principals and will travel throughout Texas, the nation and internationally to recruit and market the TTUISD programs.

“TTUISD is delighted to welcome Dr. Jim Taliaferro,” said Sam Oswald, TTUISD Executive Director. “We are certain his knowledge, reputation and respect within the State of Texas will be of great benefit to our future growth.”

Texas Tech University Independent School District (TTUISD) was established by the State Board of Education in the Fall of 1993. TTUISD currently provides educational solutions to students by offering supplemental and home school curriculum at a distance. The district also works with other schools and districts to offer testing solutions, a dropout prevention alternative and a credit recovery option. Currently, TTUISD has more than 2,900 full-time students and 8,530 supplemental students enrolled. TTUISD is accredited by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), and all courses and credit-by-exams are aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR).
