About CHACP I

History - CHACP I was constructed in 1967 and has since gone through two major expansions. The first was in 1974 when Boiler #3, Chiller #3 and cooling towers #3 & #4 were added to increase the capacity of the plant. The second was in 1999 when Chiller #4 was added as well as four additional Cooling Tower Cells to further increase the cooling capacity of the plant.

Chilled Water Capacity- The cooling capacity is tied to the amount of chilled water that can processed by the four steam turbine-powered centrifugal chillers. Currently that capacity is 20,000 tons.

Steam Capacity - Similarly to the cooling capacity of the plant, the heating capacity of the plant is tied to three 600 pounds per square inch, 750 degree, Natural Gas-Fired boilers. These three boilers produce up to 500,000 pounds of steam per hour. 

Includes - CHACP I provides its services to 6.8 million square feet of the main campus through 7.75 miles of utility tunnels. Services include: 80psi steam for heating and humidification, circulates 7.5 million gallons of chilled water for cooling, and also provides a limited supply of compressed air and reverse osmosis water for select customers. The plant has a Back Pressure Turbine Generator Capable of Producing 935 Kilowatts of electricity for internal plant use, a 1,500 Kilowatt Emergency Generator to maintain plant equipment during power outages, and three water wells for cooling tower makeup.

Budget - CHACP I has an annual operating budget of $11,488,152 this includes all external utilities purchases such as electricity, natural gas and city water. The annual operating and maintenance budget is $1,884,705 which includes the operating and maintenance budget for the Texas Tech Museum and Fiber and Biopolymer Research Institute Utility Plants. CHACP I has an annual capital improvement budget of $900,000.

About CHACP II

History - CHACP II was constructed in 1974 to provide steam and chilled water for heating and cooling services to the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and the University Medical Center.

Chilled Water Capacity - The plant currently has three steam driven centrifugal chillers capable of producing 9,000 tons of cooling capacity.

Steam Capacity - The plant has two 400 pounds per square inch 700 degree superheated steam boilers which are natural gas fired with a total capacity of 160,000 pounds per hour production.

Includes - CHACP II provides its services to over 1.8 million square feet of the Health Sciences Center and the University Medical Center through 0.75 miles of utility tunnels. Services include: 120psi steam for heating and humidification, circulates 1.5 million gallons of chilled water for cooling, and also provides a limited supply of compressed air and reverse osmosis water to the Health Sciences Center. The plant has two emergency generators capable of supplying 4000 kilowatts of electricity to maintain plant equipment as well as emergency power to the Health Sciences Center and the University Medical Center during power outages. CHACP II has two water wells for cooling tower makeup.

Budget- CHACP II has an annual operating budget of $5,286,011 this includes all external utilities purchases such as electricity, natural gas, and city water. The annual operating and maintenance budget is $788,720 and CHACP II has an annual capital improvement budget of $650,000.
