Pedro G. Melendez, DVM, MS, PhD, DABVP (Dairy)
Dr. Pedro Melendez is an Associate Professor at the School of Veterinary Medicine, Texas Tech University. He obtained his DVM at the University of Chile, and then he pursued a residency in Food Animal Medicine at the University of Florida, and earned a Master of Science in 2000 and a Ph.D. in 2004 at the same University. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, Dairy Specialty. He was faculty member at the University of Chile, University of Florida, University Santo Tomas, University of Missouri and University of Georgia. He joined Texas Tech University on February 2021.
His teaching focuses on all aspects of dairy production medicine, with special emphasis on nutritional management and metabolic diseases in dairy cattle.
His research program involves the management of transition dairy cow, epidemiology of periparturient disorders, nutrition and feeding management of dairy cattle. He is a co-editor of the book “Dairy Production Medicine” and author of several peer-reviewed publications listed on PubMed and Google Scholar.
Dr. Melendez is devoted to make contacts and support veterinary colleagues that are consulting dairy/beef farms in the panhandle area, who will teach the TTU vet students during their clinical rotations. Furthermore, he will develop CE programs for young veterinarians and outreach programs for Spanish-speaking farm workers. Dr. Melendez's major objective is to promote Texas Tech University to Latin-American countries such as Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Mexico and Uruguay, considering student exchanges, applied research, and CE programs
