The admission process involves a number of stages to select students who align with our purpose and mission of supporting the veterinary educational and service needs of rural and regional communities. The Admissions Process is overseen by the School's Admissions Committee.

During the first stage, students submit their primary application package through the through the Texas Medical and Dental Schools Application Service (TMDSAS). Once they check the package, it is sent to the School and an invitation to submit a secondary application package is sent from the School to applicants who meet our basic requirements.

Primary and secondary application packages are then pre-screened to look for evidence of each applicant's life experiences or personal attributes associated with rural and regional communities.  

Applicants who pass pre-screening then go on to an in-depth screening to select students for interviews.

It is the goal of the Admissions Committee to send out interview invitations by mid-December. The interview process is in-person at the School of Veterinary Medicine's facilities in Amarillo. The process includes a welcome session, two semi-structured interviews (each approximately 20-minutes in length), an essay station, Q&A with a panel of current students, and student-led tours.

After review of all of the information, the Admissions Committee then makes recommendations of students for admission to the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs who will make the final determination of students for admission offers.

Applicants will be notified of acceptance to School of Veterinary Medicine by mid-February or early-March of each year. Applicants will need to confirm acceptance by mid-April and pay a seat fee (non-refundable matriculation fee) of $500.00 that will be applied to the 1st semester tuition.

The Admissions Committee uses a best-practice framework to equitably and holistically balance each applicant's life experiences, personal attributes, and academic metrics to select students that align with the School's purpose and mission of supporting the veterinary educational and service needs of rural and regional communities. For students who meet our GPA requirements (or who will do so by the end of the Spring semester prior to admission), grades are not used to select at any stage of the admission process. The Committee focuses on life experiences and personal attributes relative to the School's purpose and mission.
