Create the Future

A Spring Break Camp, open to all children in kindergarten through 6th grade. Experienced public school teachers lead classes that follow a different theme each day, including art, theatre, science, music, and fitness and wellness. Create the Future is administered by IDEAL.

Advanced Placement

Allows entering first-year students the opportunity to receive credit for work completed in high school. Examinations and/or portfolios provide evidence of achievement. Different departments maintain individualized provisions for the ways in which such credit can be applied.

The Advanced Placement Institute

(offerings on Tech Campus) and the course for High School art teachers about Advanced Placement in Studio Art (at the Junction campus) are administered through IDEAL.

Art

Pre-College Immersion Program

Saturday Morning Art Project

The Saturday Morning Art Project is an enrichment program in the visual arts for talented high school students. The project began in 1981 from a collaborative effort by the Junior League of Lubbock, the Texas Tech Art Department, the Texas Tech Museum and the Lubbock Independent School District; it continues today as a cooperative venture between the Helen DeVitt Jones Foundation and the School of Art.

Music

School of Music Summer Camps

The Texas Tech Band & Orchestra Camp

now in existence for over 70 years, invites the participation of band and orchestra students (harp included) who have completed at least one year of playing experience and who can read music. The camp has 14 concert bands and 4 orchestras. Students participate daily in two band or orchestra rehearsals, a sectional/techniques class, a camp assembly, and one or two elective classes. In addition, harpists participate in harp ensemble and learn pop and jazz styles.

All-state Choir Camp

Sponsored by the Choral Department, the Texas Tech All-State Choir Camp is open to all students entering the 9th grade and above, and is held on the Texas Tech University campus as either a residential program or a day program for local participants. Emphasis is placed on learning the All-State Music in preparation for auditions: many students who have attended the camp during the past 19 years have gone on to make one of the All-State Choirs!

Theatre & Dance

The School of Theatre & Dance recognizes the need for community engagement that features after (and during)-school theatre/dance activities in under-served areas of Lubbock both on and off campus. Every semester, students from each program (BA, BFA, MA, MFA, PHD) enroll in Theatre & Dance in the Community, a service-learning course, and engage with community partners around Lubbock to incorporate theatre and dance activities into their curriculum for their constituents. Past community partners include: Guadalupe-Parkway Sommerville Centers, the Boys & Girls Club, Covenant Children's Hospital, the Burkhart Center for Autism Education and Research, Atkins Middle School, and several LISD elementary schools.
