The Institute for the Study of Western Civilization is sponsoring an essay competition for Texas Tech University undergraduate students. The winner of the contest will receive a $1,000 scholarship toward their Texas Tech tuition. To win, students must attend the featured lecture presented by Jay Winter, entitled “The Second Great War, 1917-1923,” which will take place at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, November 12, 2018 in the Escondido Theater (Room 001) of the Student Union Building at Texas Tech.

In the essay, students must describe the ideas developed in Dr. Winter's lecture, and provide his or her own thoughts on the subject. Persuasiveness, imagination, prose quality, and independent research into the nature of the topic of Dr. Winter's lecture will all be important factors in deciding who will be the winner of the contest.   

Qualifications:
 
  • Essays must be roughly 1,000-2,000 words in length.
  •  Students must attend Jay Winter's lecture on November 12th and include their name and contact information on the available sign in sheet at the lecture in order to qualify and participate. 
  • The deadline for essay submissions is Friday, November 30, 2018.  
  • The winner will be announced by Friday, December 14, 2018. 
  • Essays should be submitted to Dr. Stephen H. Balch, Director of the Institute for the Study of Western Civilization, at steve.balch@ttu.edu.
