Whitacre College of Engineering Among America's Best

The educational experience in the Whitacre College of Engineering is one of the nation’s top 80, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2011 college rankings.

In the magazine’s yearly assessment of America’s best schools, Texas Tech’s undergraduate engineering program is now tied for 78th. The undergraduate program rankings are based on peer assessments only.

“The faculty and staff of the Whitacre College of Engineering are working continuously to provide our students with the highest quality education,” said Jon Strauss, interim dean of the college. “This ranking confirms that Red Raider engineers are among the best in the nation.”

New Departmental Leadership

Giesselmann Dr. Michael Giesselmann, professor of electrical and computer engineering, will serve as the new chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering effective September 1.






Hashemi Dr. Javad Hashemi, professor of mechanical engineering and associate dean for research in the Whitacre College of Engineering, will serve as the interim chair of the Bob L. Herd Department of Petroleum Engineering effective September 1.

Watson Receives Professor of Excellence Award

Watson Dr. Marshall Watson, assistant professor of petroleum engineering and vice president of ACT Operating in Midland, was recently featured in an article in the Midland Reporter-Telegram. Watson received the Professor of Excellence Award for the 2009-2010 school year from the Texas Tech chapter of Tau Beta Pi.


Cooke's SequenceL May Solve Major Computer Issues

Cooke Dr. Daniel E. Cooke, Paul Whitfield Horn Professor and professor of computer science, was recently featured in a technology article on computer multicore issues. The article details how SequenceL, a language written by Cooke and his group, may hold the keys to solving one the problems associated with multiple-core computers.

Eric West Named National Young Engineer of the Year

Eric West Eric West, a 1998 graduate of Texas Tech with a Master of Science in Civil Engineering, is a stockholder, team leader, and civil office manager in Midland, Texas with Parkhill, Smith, and Cooper. He has been selected 2010 National Young Engineer of the Year by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE).

The award recognizes young NSPE members who have made outstanding contributions to the engineering profession and their communities during the early years of their careers.
