New Audience for College's Engineering Our Future Magazine

The Whitacre College of Engineering is pleased to announce that the college's magazine, Engineering Our Future Magazine, has now been transitioned into an alumni magazine for all engineering alumni. Nearly 18,000 magazines were sent in the first week of January to Texas Tech engineering alumni and friends across the nation.

The magazine features stories about current students and faculty, alumni features, as well as other news and events.

Texas Tech University in Abilene Adjusts Offerings to Meet Student Needs

Because of changing student needs, officials at Texas Tech University at Abilene announced on Dec. 21 that the branch will no longer offer classes with face-to-face instruction for master’s degrees in computer science and software engineering, or the doctoral degree in computer science.

However, students still will be able to access credit hours for a master’s degree in software engineering and several other master’s degree programs through Texas Tech’s University College, formerly the College of Outreach and Distance Education.

“We will develop individual degree plans to ensure that the students currently enrolled in Abilene will have the opportunity to complete their degrees in a timely fashion,” Joseph Urban, chairman of the Department of Computer Science said. “Our faculty members will return to Lubbock. The Master of Science in Software Engineering degree program is still available in Abilene through the distance-learning program.”

• Dr. Delong Zuo was awarded $12,500 by the State Energy Conservation Office. The title of the proposal was "Wind Resource Measurements in Support of Integrated Wind-Water Systems and Education/Training Applications."

• Dr. Ranadip Pal was awarded $77,107 by the National Science Foundation. The title of the proposal was "Career: Robustness in Genetic Regulatory Network Modeling and Control."
• Dr. Hamed Sari-Sarraf was awarded $32,457 by Cotton Incorporated. The title of the proposal was "Feasibility Study: Evaluation of Sensing Devices for Fabric Shrinkage and Fabric Smoothness."
• Drs. Hongxing Jiang and Jingyu Lin were awarded $63,875 by the U.S. Army Research Office. The title of the proposal was "High Al-Content AlGaN Alloys for Deep UV Laser Applications."
• Dr. Hamed Sari-Sarraf was awarded $50,249 by Cotton Incorporated. The title of the proposal was "Real-time Cotton Fiber Characterization."

Industrial Engineering

• Dr. Ismael R deFarias was awarded $52,502 by the Office of Naval Research. The title of the proposal was "Cardinality Bounded Mathematical Programs: New Techniques, Models and Computation."
• Dr. Mario Beruvides was awarded $9,974 by Texas State Technical College - Harlingen. The title of the proposal was "Dual/Concurrent Enrollment Research Project (Calvo)."
• Drs. Jennifer Farris, Timothy I. Matis, and Iris V. Rivero were awarded $19,203 by Medical Center Hospital (Odessa, Tx). The title of the proposal was "Patient Discharge Process Improvement Project: Phase Two (September 20-09-August 2010)."
• Dr. Timothy I. Matis was awarded $31,110 by Municipal De San Pedro Coahuila. The title of the proposal was "Plan of Commercial Development of San Pedro Coahuila as Logistic Center."
