Texas Tech Alumni Association Hosts 2009 Homecoming Dinner: "A Matador Evening"

Senator Robert L. Duncan

Senator Robert Duncan graduated from Texas Tech in 1976 with a bachelor's degree in agricultural economics.

Senator Robert Duncan will be honored with The Lauro F. Cavazos Award at the Texas Tech Alumni Association’s 2009 “A Matador Evening: The 49th Annual Homecoming Dinner.”

This year’s event will be held Friday, Oct. 9, 2009, at the Overton Park Hotel and Conference Center. A reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m.

As always, “A Matador Evening” is both a fund raiser and a friend raiser, with proceeds benefiting academic scholarships at Texas Tech.

The Lauro F. Cavazos Award

The Lauro F. Cavazos Award is presented to individuals who have made a positive impact on the university through outstanding accomplishments, acts of service and/or financial support.

Senator Robert L. Duncan has provided both countless hours of public service and financial support to Texas Tech University, West Texas and Texas as a whole. Robert Duncan, who earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics from Texas Tech in 1976, has served for 26 years as a state representative; 10 years as District 83 Representative and 12 years as District 28 Representative. Mr. Duncan has served as Chairman for the State Affairs Committee and is a member of the Finance Committee, Jurisprudence Committee, Natural Resources Committee and the Budget Conference Committee.  Mr. Duncan is also a partner with the Crenshaw, Dupree & Milam, L.L.P. Law Firm. He is a member of the American Bar Association, State Bar of Texas, Texas Association of Defense Counsel, and the Defense Research Institute. Senator Duncan is a member and past director of the Lubbock County Bar Association, sits on the advisory board of the Southwest Institute of Addictive Diseases and serves on the executive committee for the National Conference of Insurance Legislators.

The Distinguished Service Award

The Distinguished Service Award, which will also be presented during the event, recognizes outstanding service rendered to the Alumni Association or Texas Tech University. This year’s recipient of the Distinguished Service Award is Janie Ramirez. Mrs. Ramirez graduated from Texas Tech University in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Bilingual Secretarial in the College of Arts and Sciences. Mrs. Ramirez currently serves as an Outreach Programs Administrator in the College of Education. She served as the president of the Hispanic Association of Women, chair and vice chair for Keep Lubbock Beautiful, served on the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal Editorial Board, Raiders Rojos National Alumni Board, Texas Tech School of Nursing Advisory Board and served on the Texas Tech University Staff Senate.

The Texas Tech Alumni Association is offering a corporate sponsorship for Homecoming Week 2009, which will take place during the week of October 5 – 9, 2009. For more information regarding sponsoring “A Matador Evening” please contact the Alumni Association at (806) 742-3641.

The money generated from the sponsorship will assist the Texas Tech Alumni Association in the underwriting costs of the events listed above.
