Welcome to Health, Exercise, & Sport Sciences (HESS)
Welcome to the Department of Health, Exercise, & Sport Sciences (HESS). We are the largest undergraduate department at Texas Tech University with approximately 1100 students. HESS graduates go on to careers in sport coaching in junior and senior high schools, management and/or coaching opportunities in youth, intercollegiate, or professional sports, and careers in commercial, corporate, or clinical exercise. Students graduating from our Masters program have gone on to careers in a variety of professional fields including: teaching and coaching; human sciences; allied health; engineering and ergonomics; physical medicine; sports industry (e.g. Nike); biomechanics technology (e.g. Peak Performance, Vicon); the aerospace industry; cardiopulmonary diagnostic testing and rehabilitation; sport physiology and applying the social-psychological aspects of sport. Graduates from the Sport Management program have obtained positions in major and minor league baseball, National Basketball Association, National Football League, National Hockey League, PGA, and Division I intercollegiate athletic departments.
The HESS Department participates in two collaborative doctoral programs. Students interested in a doctoral program in physical education pedagogy can obtain a Ph.D. in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction within the College of Education with a concentration/specialization in physical education. Students interested in a doctoral program in sport psychology can obtain a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology with a concentration/specialization in sport psychology in the Department of Educational Psychology and Leadership within the College of Education.
The Department of Health, Exercise & Sport Sciences is a charter member of the American Kinesiology Association and joins AKA in efforts to promote the discipline of kinesiology by conducting sound research, preparing quality students and enhancing peoples’ physical activity and health.
