ENERGY MANAGEMENT
Energy Management tracks campus energy use and develops methods to help our buildings use energy more efficiently. Energy Management studies how each building performs to recommend improvements in areas such as lighting, water use, heating, cooling, and other utility systems.
Energy Efficiency
Texas Tech Universitys Energy Management team and the Environmental Systems Maintenance (ESM) group work together to make our campus use energy more wisely. For more than 11 years, this partnership has helped the university lower its yearly energy use compared to our original baseline. They reach these goals by using smart methods to control temperatures in classrooms and offices.
During warmer months, the steam system is turned off to reduce how much chilled water and steam the campus needs. When the weather is colder, the teams use fresh outside air to help keep buildings comfortable while cutting down on chilled water use. Because of their strong teamwork and successful strategies, Texas Tech University has been recognized by Association of Physical Plant Administrators (APPA) as one of the “Top Energy‑Saving Campuses.”
Energy Management also keeps track of how much energy the campus uses by calculating the Energy Use Index (EUI). This index is based on the total energy the university consumes—such as electricity, natural gas, and imported steam—divided by the amount of indoor space that requires heating or cooling. This helps the university understand how efficiently it uses energy and where improvements can be made.
Reports
Since Energy Management was created, Texas Tech University has saved over $27 million in energy costs. Savings continued to be achieved even with increased energy intensive spaces and increased student enrollment.
Control Center
Operations Control Center (ODCC) performs skilled work in monitoring environmental control equipment, energy management, energy efficiency programs, and property/life safety alarms for Texas Tech University facilities. Control Center operators troubleshoot HVAC controls from the Building Automation System (BAS) front end and assist technicians who are working in the field. Operations Control Center is on campus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and it serves as the main contact for after-hours facility requests.
Energy Exception
Formal approval is required for an Education and General (E&G) organizational unit to operate its air‑handler unit(s) outside the standard operating parameters established by the University President.
Monday – Friday
0600-2100
Seasonal Setpoints for:
- Fall – 73°
- Winter – 69°
- Spring – 73°
- Summer – 76°
Requests of exceptions are prepared through Energy Management, who will report the requested schedule changes and will calculate the cost impact on the campus's energy budget.
