Texas Tech University

Summer Energy Conservation and Working Hours

Texas Tech University will implement a modified summer schedule from May 19 through August 8, 2025, in support of energy conservation.

Work Schedules & Office Coverage
  • Offices will remain open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • With supervisor approval, employees may follow a flex schedule (i.e., 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch).
  • All offices must maintain full coverage between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., including the lunch hour.
  • The summer dress code will be business casual unless otherwise specified by your departmental leadership.

Building Cooling & Temperature Settings
  • Cooling will be provided during regular business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mon–Fri).
  • Building setpoints will be adjusted to 76°F for the summer semesters.
  • To request exceptions, use the Operations website.
  • Previously approved exceptions remain valid, and 24/7 research spaces will not be impacted.
  • For immediate or temporary cooling needs, call 806.742.4OPS.

After-Hours & Weekend Cooling
  • Outside of business hours—including weekends, holidays and university breaks—most buildings will follow a reduced-hour holiday cooling schedule.
  • Those working during these times may call 806.742.4OPS to have air conditioning temporarily turned on.
  • Prep-time cooling will be shortened, so buildings may not be fully cooled at the start of day.

Energy Conservation Guidelines
  • Limit the number of active workstations to reflect reduced student load.
  • Enable sleep mode on inactive computers after 15 minutes.
  • Turn off lights and electronics when leaving rooms for more than 15 minutes.

Statewide Energy Alerts
  • ERCOT may request reduced energy use during peak demand.
  • You can monitor real-time grid conditions at ERCOT’s website.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping Texas Tech reduce energy consumption and support resource conservation efforts.
