HESS Graduate Admission Requirements
Overview
An overall profile of the student is the deciding factor in admission decisions. The graduate program committee will review all admission criteria outlined below and make a decision concerning admission.
Deadlines
Deadline dates for graduate application applicants:
- Fall - August 1st
- Spring - December 1st
- Summer - May 1st
Criteria For Consideration
- Letter of Intent
- An undergraduate degree in Exercise and Sport Sciences (ESS) or a related field from an accredited institution with a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the last 60 hours of undergraduate and graduate coursework.
- Demonstration of academic achievement and potential as indicated by the results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
- Three letters of recommendation (preferably from Academic Professors).
- Other evidence of background and experience that may be available.
- TOEFL score of at least 213 (computer) or 550 (written) for those students for whom English is a foreign language.
GRE Scoring Changes
APPLICANTS FOR ADMISSION IN SPRING 2012:
Because of scoring changes, GRE scores will NOT be sent to institutions from August 1 through November 15, 2011. It is therefore important that Spring 2012 applicants submit GRE scores by July 31, 2011, so that scores can be received in time for departmental consideration.
Non-ESS Degree Applicants
For students who are recommended for admission into the graduate program but do not possess a degree in ESS or a related field, leveling work is required. The leveling work is intended to help connect the student to our field and prepare them for graduate course work in our department. Nine hours of work at the 3000 or 4000 level is required (excluding ESS 4000 and 3321) with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
How to Apply
Step 1:
When you are ready to apply to the TTU Graduate School, you should ask the schools where you studied before to send a copy of your official transcripts to the Director of Graduate Admissions at Texas Tech.
If you have taken the GRE, you should request the Educational Testing Service to report your scores to the Dean of the Graduate School. You can view the university Graduate Catalog online.
You can check our listing on the program details page for prerequisites for admission to a specific track (such as sports administration and sports health). Each of these tracks have specific, additional criteria for evaluating applicants.
