The Department of Health, Exercise, and Sport Sciences (HESS) at Texas Tech University invites applications for the position of Chairperson to begin September 1, 2014 with the possibility of an earlier start date if desired. Applicants should have academic credentials commensurate with those of an advanced Associate or Full Professor with tenure and an earned doctorate in Kinesiology or a related field. Candidates must demonstrate a sustained record of achievement in funded research, teaching, and service. It would also be preferable if the successful candidate has relevant administrative experience, has strong leadership skills, and has served in professional organizations. Texas Tech offers possibilities for collaborations with the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, as well as community and governmental agencies.
The department currently offers B.S. and M.S. degrees, and there are plans to develop a doctoral program in Kinesiology. HESS has 16 tenured or tenure-‐track faculty members, 1330 undergraduate majors, and 70 graduate majors. Undergraduate program tracks are offered in Physical Education/Teacher Education, Exercise and Health Promotion, Exercise Sciences, and Sport Management. Graduate students are enrolled in the Master’s degree program in Exercise and Sport Sciences (concentrations in Exercise Science and Sport Management). The Department also provides concentration areas in doctoral programs within other departments in other colleges (e.g., Curriculum & Instruction and Educational Psychology in the College and Education, Animal Sciences in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, and Rehabilitation Sciences at the Health Sciences Center). Texas Tech University is classified as a doctoral research-‐extensive university by the Carnegie Foundation, has an enrollment of ca. 30,000 students, and is one of the major, state-‐ supported, multidisciplinary universities of the Southwest. Texas Tech offers 104 masters and 57 doctoral programs, with Schools of Medicine and Law located on the main campus. Lubbock, which is located in West Texas, is a commercial, medical, and cultural hub with a population of more than 225,000.
