What is the Terry Foundation Scholar Program?

The Terry Foundation is a Houston-based scholarship program founded to provide scholarships to outstanding Texas High school graduates for attendance at public colleges and universities within the state. Established in 1986 by Houston philanthropists Howard & Nancy Terry, the Foundation has assisted hundreds of Terry Scholars in meeting the Founders' goal of helping young people to help themselves.

What are the types of Terry Foundation Scholarship Programs at Texas Tech?

  1. (1) the freshman program for incoming freshmen and
  2. (2) the transfer program for those choosing to enter Texas Tech with 30+ post high school hours.

Texas Tech Terry Foundation Scholar Programs

Traditional Freshman Program for Entering College Freshmen

The deadline to apply for the 2015 Terry Traditional Freshman Scholarship is January 15, 2015.

The Terry Foundation Scholarship program provides scholarships for up to four (4) years to outstanding Texas high school graduates who show promise for being future leaders of Texas. The Foundation has assisted hundreds of Terry Scholars in meeting the founders’ goal of helping young people to help themselves.

Selection Criteria

To be considered for the Terry Scholars at TTU program, students should be able to demonstrate a strong record of leadership in school and community, show financial need, and possess strong academic abilities, as evidenced by grades, class rank, and ACT or SAT scores. Applicants must also be graduates from a Texas high school (or home schooled in Texas) and admitted to the Texas Tech University as a full time student.

Selection Process

From the applications received, only a few candidates will be nominated and their applications forwarded to the Foundation for review. Please know that Texas Tech University serves as a nominating body only; all final decisions regarding Terry Foundation Scholarship awards and award amounts are made by the Terry Foundation.

Award Amount

Terry Scholar award amounts are determined annually based on the cost of attendance at TTU, including tuition, fees, books, on campus room and board and miscellaneous expenses. The actual specific amount of the award will vary for each scholar, depending on other scholarship awards and the ability of the scholar's family to contribute to the cost of college.

Student Housing

Terry Scholars at Texas Tech live together in Murray Hall during their first year. Living together helps create a strong community and Terry's form lasting friendships during their time in the residence hall. Additional Opportunities

In addition to the academic continuing scholarship requirements and the three (3) required Foundation events each year, the successful TTU Terry Scholar will be prepared to be actively involved in campus activities.

Terry Student Organization

A special TTU student organization for Terry Scholars will offer recipients the opportunity to develop a community service agenda and mentor incoming scholars. Learn More HERE

Transfer Terry Program for those incoming students with 30+ Post High School Hours

The Terry Foundation Scholarship program provides scholarships to transfer students for two (2) years, but up to three (3) years, if needed to graduate, to outstanding Texas transfer students who show promise for being future leaders of Texas. Established in 1986 by Houston philanthropists Nancy & Howard Terry, the Foundation has assisted hundreds of Terry Scholars in meeting the founders’ goal of helping young people to help themselves.

Selection Criteria

To be a strong candidate for the Terry Transfer Scholars at TTU program, students should be able to demonstrate a strong record of leadership, show financial need, and possess strong academic abilities, as evidenced by grades.

Applicants must also:

  • Have completed college or university credits of at least 30 transferable hours;
  • Be accepted as a full time non-freshman transfer student beginning in the fall semester at one of the participating universities in the Terry Scholar program;
  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and resident of the state of Texas;
  • Commit to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and comply with verification requirements no later than March 1, 2014; and
  • Be a graduate of a Texas high school or equivalent.

Award Amount

Terry Transfer Scholar award amounts are a fixed $12,000 per year. The Terry Foundation Board of Directors will determine awards beyond the first year (renewal awards) for Terry Scholars meeting the required continuing scholarship criteria.

Student Housing

Transfer Terry Scholars at Texas Tech are welcome to live in Murray Hall. There is a transfer Learning Community on the 2nd floor of Murray. Living together helps create a stong community and Terry's form lasting friendships during their time in the residence hall. Learn More HERE

Apply as soon as possible.Based on the student's answers to the questions on Apply Texas as well as the scholarship application for the university, students are nominated to become scholarship candidates. The university will email qualified applicants an invitation to apply through January.

After applications are received to the university a committee reviews the applications and sends forward a select few to the foundation for consideration in February. From there several will be called and invited to interview with a panel in April or May.

The interview panel will select the incoming class of Terrys for the following fall.

Students who receive the Terry Scholarship are a part of the Terry Student Organization, who functions to enhance the experience of the Terry Scholars and to give back to the community at large.
