Center for Advising

Todd Chambers 24 August, 2015

The CoMC Center for Advising focuses on assisting all prospective and current students with individual degree plans for Advertising, Communication Studies, Electronic Media & Communications, Journalism, Media Strategies and Public Relations. Our experienced and professional advising staff uses their expertise and knowledge in each of these areas to provide the best academic advising possible for students seeking particular career pathways.

Our Director of Advising is Julia Heard Witt and I asked her a few questions. Mrs. Witt has been part of the CoMC family since April 2015 and is very excited about the future direction of advising for each of our majors. Her hometown is Baton Rouge, Louisiana and she earned her Bachelor of Science in Hotel Restaurant Management with a minor in Business Administration from Auburn University in 2000. She earned her Master’s in Education in Counseling and Human Development from Hardin-Simmons University in 2003.

What is your professional experience?
I worked as a Manager at Little Rock Country Club after graduating from Auburn prior to attending graduate school. After graduating with my Master’s I was employed with South Plains College where I served as the Veteran Counselor for 10 plus years. I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor with the state of Texas and also hold my National Counselor Certification.

What does the Center for Advising do?
We help students navigate through their careers at the College of Media Communications and Texas Tech University. We assist students in degree selection based on career goals and advise on course selection based on their degree. We are a triage center helping students receive the services they need to help them rise to their greatest potential as students and future professionals.

Why should a CoMC student utilize the resources in the Center for Advising?
It is important to have support, not only academically but personally and professionally, while here on campus. The advisors can serve as mentors and guides as students navigate the system. There is a whole different language in college and the Center of Advising serves as a road map to success for students.
