Utilize Video to Engage Students

By Holley Baker, Instructional Designer

According to a recent Pew Research study (2018), approximately 90% of all internet users ages 15-25 watch their videos online, with roughly 86% of those studied claiming to watch videos on YouTube to "figure out how to do things they haven't done before." This may be typically for DIY home or auto repairs, but online instructors can use this trend to their benefit. Your students are already using video streaming to learn things, so why not create your own videos to engage them in your online class? Academic videos can help you establish your presence in your class, create meaningful connections with your students and engage your students with the class content.

The TTU Worldwide eLearning team now offers a range of video production services to faculty and academic departments at Texas Tech University. The eLearning video production team is here to help faculty members create engaging academic videos for their online and hybrid classes. Not sure what kind of video you want to develop? Our team can guide you through each step of the production process. We will work with you to develop your project to its fullest potential, and help you determine the best format to fit your class's content.

During your initial consultation, we will discuss your goals and vision for your videos. This will help us prepare our equipment, identify potential copyright issues and plan a tentative timeline for your project. Once we determine the project constraints, our team will review the request and sign-off to begin production. Our production capabilities include an on-campus studio and staff to help you create welcome videos, instructional videos, demonstrations, digital whiteboard videos, interviews, and more. Let our experienced team help elevate your creative vision and communicate your message in an engaging, accessible and shareable package.

The first step in any video production request is to complete our online request form. This form will ask for your contact information, as well as some basic questions on your project requirements. You can also email the video team directly at elearning.videolab@ttu.edu. If applicable, your instructional designer can assist you with this request and will be present at your consultation with the media team. If you have not worked with an eLearning & Academic Partnerships Instructional Design, please feel free to visit our Faculty Support page to request their services.
