Dr. Arlene García-Marquez

Dr. Arlene García-Marquez, an expert in developing and implementing animal welfare programs essential for sustainable agriculture, has recently been awarded a $750,000 grant with the proposal development assistance of TTU's International Grants & Partnerships' division of the Office of International Affairs.

Dr. García's project, entitled “Developing Spanish communicative competence among veterinary and animal science students to improve U.S. agriculture”, responds to the Capacity Building Grants for Non-Land Grant Colleges of Agriculture Program (NLGCA) by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture. In collaboration with North Carolina State University, Tarleton State University, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and collaborators from the University of Zulia, Venezuela, Dr. García and her team will develop and implement three courses of Spanish for Specific Purposes (SSP) in Agriculture for current veterinary medicine and animal science curriculums at Texas Tech's School of Veterinary Medicine and the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. This 3-year collaboration, in line with two of Texas Tech's 2017-2024 Strategic Priorities, will promote the education and empowerment of a diverse student body and enable innovative research and creative activities on our campus.

Dr. Garcia-Marquez earned her doctorate in animal science in 2014 and her master's degree in animal sciences in 2010, both from the College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources at Texas Tech.

We congratulate Dr. García-Marquez for her achievement, and we encourage all TTU Faculty developing an international grant to reach out to our unit for support.
