Prasanth Chelikani, BVSc, MVSc, PhD, FTOS

Personal Information
Prasanth Chelikani is a Professor of Physiology. He graduated with a BVSc (Bachelor of Veterinary Science) degree followed by an MVSc in reproductive physiology from Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University, Tirupati, India, and a PhD in animal science from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. He then pursued post-doctoral training in gastrointestinal physiology at the VA Medical Center/Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska. He was one of the founding faculty at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Calgary, Canada, from June 2007 to December 2020. He joined the Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine as a founding faculty in January 2021 and teaches primarily in physiology-related courses in the DVM and graduate programs.CV
Research Interests
The Chelikani lab primarily uses rodent models to gain insights into the mechanisms by which dietary, pharmacological and surgical interventions promote weight loss and improve metabolic health. We also collaborate with colleagues using large animal models of metabolic diseases. Our research interests are on:
· Defining the mechanisms of food intake and body weight regulation by gut hormones.
· Delineating the mechanisms by which dietary protein and fiber regulate energy balance and metabolism.
· Elucidating the mechanisms of weight loss and metabolic improvements following bariatric surgeries. Publications: PubMed (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=chelikani+pk)
Future Research Collaboration
· Gut microbiota – host cross talk in the regulation of satiety, energy expenditure and metabolism.
· Mechanisms by which dietary nutrients modulate energy balance and improve metabolic health.
· Translational studies on dietary and surgical manipulations for protection against metabolic syndrome.
