Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work

A Welcome from the Past and Current ChairsThe Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work (SASW) is a multi-disciplinary unit whose focus is on quality teaching, innovative research, and relevant service. In the broadest terms, the faculty in SASW are concerned with the human condition—at home and abroad, in the present and in the past, and theoretically and practically-speaking. We have ties to many other departments on campus and collaborations with local scholars and communities as well as with those in other countries. The faculty of SASW offers five degree programs: the Bachelors and Masters degrees in anthropology; the Bachelors (BSW) degree in social work; and the Bachelors and Masters degrees in sociology. We also provide a large number of courses in the Core Curriculum in Social and Behavioral Sciences. You might become interested in one of our departmental disciplines through enrollment in a core requirement. We are engaged in a broad range of research and professional practice activities that inform our teaching. Please browse our Research and Service pages to find out more. Please take a few minutes to get to know us through the information we have posted here. If you have any questions or would like further information, please contact us. Our main departmental office is located in Room 158 on the first floor of Holden Hall. You can call us at (806) 742-2400. —Jeff Williams, Associate Dean and Past Chair As we look toward the future, SASW is preparing itself to meet the University’s Tier One goals by more aggressively seeking funded research projects; moving toward establishing a doctoral program in sociology with an emphasis on the Globalization – Community theme; by continuing our efforts to maintain the excellent teaching reputation on campus; and by expanding our service reach locally and globally.
