2018 Tech Savvy Flyer

Tech Savvy is a one-day STEM Conference designed for girls 6th through 8th grade and their parents. The program's purpose is to help young girls discover realistic STEM careers and pathways to education, and equip parents to be an encouraging and reinforcing part of the process. All parents are encouraged to attend, however, if the students want to come with their friends, or a teacher, that's great, too!

During registration, students will be able to select their top choices for workshops. Any adult attending with the student will be participating in the adult program, and will also need to register. Parents not participating in the adult program should plan on waiting with their student until they are checked in. Parents can meet their students for pickup in the same (drop-off) location at the end of the program. Parents dropping off their students do not need to register or pay.

Registration Information

Because of limitations of our system, only 1 student (and 1 adult, if desired) can be registered at a time. If you are registering more than 1 student, you will need to use a different debit/credit card for each student or wait more than 24 hours between registrations. If you would like to use the same payment method for more than 1 student, please email Jessica Spott and coordinate with her.

If you are interested in registering a large group of students for a school, which would require payment through a check, please also email Jessica Spott. Keep in mind payment for all participants MUST be received one week before the conference to avoid being dropped from the registration system.

Workshop Options

Students will be able to select 1 workshop choice for their morning workshop and 1 for their afternoon workshop. Click here to view the Tech Savvy 2019 workshop choices

As space in each workshop is limited, so as each workshop fills up, it will be taken off the registration site. If the morning workshop you are looking for fills up, check in the afternoon and vice versa.

Tech Savvy Location

Tech Savvy Check-in, lunch and closing presentation will be in the Ballroom in the Student Union Building. Students will be escorted by volunteers to and from each workshop. Workshop locations will differ, depending on the track selected.  Parent programming will be held in the TTU Student Union.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Raegan Higgins

Dr. Raegan Higgins

Raegan Higgins didn't always love math. In her eyes, it was a class that everyone had to take. It wasn't hard nor was it easy; it just was. Upon placing out of Pre-Algebra in middle school, Raegan entered Algebra which quickly became her adversary. With little Pre-Algebra background, she struggled in the course she called “The Land of Unknowns.” With a very encouraging no-nonsense teacher and parents who only asked for their daughter's best, Raegan excelled in Algebra and became an aspiring mathematician.

In 2008, Raegan was one of the first two African-Americans to earn a doctoral degree in Mathematics from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln. She had officially become a mathematician. In that same year, she joined the faculty at Texas Tech University. Her primary research focuses on determining conditions in which solutions to differential-like equations eventually stay positive or negative. While also interested in applications of time scales (nonempty subsets of the real numbers), Dr. Higgins has a keen interest in increasing the number women, especially those underrepresented, in STEM and improving the undergraduate preparation of mathematics majors. In 2013, Dr. Higgins co-founded Young Women in Mathematics (now The Raiders Chapters of the Association for Women in Mathematics). This group provides a unique opportunity for TTU women to empower, motivate, and support one another in a field where they may face obstacles due to their gender. In 2014, the West Texas Association for Women in Science recognized her as the Outstanding Woman Leader for her commitment to the education, training, and mentoring of women in STEM. Since coming to TTU, Dr. Higgins has participated in the annual Emmy Noether High School Mathematics Day as a workshop speaker or career panelist.

Raegan enjoys watching home improvement shows and bowling. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated and is the president of the local alumnae chapter. Raegan and her handsome husband, Dr. Kamau Oginga Siwatu, are the proud parents two lovely children. Their daughter, Jalia, is an inquisitive eight-year old and son, Tendaji, is a fun-loving kindergartner.
