What does an advocate do?
Provides life skills lessons and helps the student learn to use their voice to ask
for what they need, be that voice by working with the school administration to express
the student's needs until the student is able to advocate for themselves.
When does the advocate meet with the student?
Weekly for 30-45 min.
Where do the advocate and the student meet?
At the student's school, during school hours.
Why do students need an advocate?
"Relationships and connections with others are what keep students in school when they
are struggling in or out of school" (Gibson and Barr 2015).
How do I become an advocate?
All volunteers should submit an info request form below. Please ensure that you meet
the below qualifications:
Must be able to pass a background check
Have a valid government ID and reliable transportation
Commitment to in-person trainings on the TTU campus (1-2 per semester)
A desire to strengthen the community and serve adolescents at risk
Ability to spend 45 minutes to an hour working with a local student each week.
