Message from the CIO

The fall semester is upon us, complete with cooler weather, holiday festivities, and a rapidly approaching conclusion to the academic terms. In preparation for the holiday season, we offer online shopping tips to help you protect your confidential information. For the many of us impacted by the massive Equifax data breach in 2017, we are including a reprint of a Federal Trade Commission article (September, 2019) outlining victim restitution options. To protect institutional data and information resources, please review the solutions for online data storage available to the TTU campus community. Remember that we are all responsible for protecting institutional and personal information. Lastly, we are requesting campus feedback on our TTUnet WiFi services, as we have done before. We highly value your input and will continue to incorporate the feedback, as we work to continuously enhance TTUnet WiFi services. We hope you enjoy the fall season, exercise caution, and remember to think before you click!

Message from the CIO

Each spring, the TTU Office of the CIO designates an “IT Spring Cleaning Week” to reinforce the importance of reducing digital clutter and reducing unneeded paper records containing institutional information. As a component of our IT Security Plan, the spring cleaning initiative helps to improve our information management and data security posture, as well as to promote the efficient use of institutional information technology resources. In this issue, we provide information about our upcoming Red Raider Shred Week—a partnership with the TTU Operations Division. Our climate is challenging for sensitive technology, so we provide two articles on cleaning your devices. Please also consider taking time this week to reduce unnecessary electronic files, and to peruse your social media accounts to eliminate unnecessary or unwanted pictures and information. Here’s to another successful spring semester, Go Tech!

Texas Tech University has had a very exciting spring season and we extend our congratulations to Coach Beard and his amazing basketball team! In this issue, we provide information on updates to the FaceTime features on various Apple devices, as well as Apple operating system requirements for Microsoft OneDrive. This semester we have been piloting our new online cybersecurity training materials, and are planning to launch the training this fall for faculty and staff—details to follow. On May 1st, we opened nominations for the CIO “Excellence in IT Innovation Award.” Award recipients will be announced and honored at our annual IT Year in Review in December. We look forward to receiving your nominations. Finally, storm season is upon us, so we urge you to update your contact information in the TechAlert emergency contact database. Go Tech!

Message from the CIO

As fall settles in on the South Plains, Texas Tech University is once again experiencing another record fall enrollment. Along with the rest of the TTU community, the TTU IT Division has a busy and exciting fall semester of activity. In this issue, we provide information about our technology learning opportunities offered at our Advanced Technology Learning Center (ATLC), two timely articles about the discontinuation of Microsoft Windows 7 and 8.1 support, and our new Adobe student access. Finally, we encourage departments to nominate projects that demonstrate the innovative use of technology, that improve operations and support TTU strategic goals and priorities. We will recognize the award recipients at our annual IT Year in Review in December. Enjoy the energy and activities of the fall semester. Go Tech!
