Ballistics is a natural extension for reactive material characterization, expecially materials designed to be used for structural applications. With support from an ONR instrumentation proposal, we asked former graduate Dr. John Granier to design and build a high-velocity impact-ignition system, which we fondly call HITS! We launch .410 caliber projectiles using a propellant gun into a catch chamber instrumented with high speed cameras and pressure sensors. We are learning a lot about fragmentation and reaction upon impact at velocities up to 1500 m/s. AFRL
