Operating Policy and Procedure

OP 61.38: Animals in Texas Tech Buildings

PURPOSE: The purpose of this Operating Policy/Procedure (OP) is to define the guidelines governing the presence of non-laboratory animals in university buildings.

REVIEW: This OP will be reviewed in September of every fourth year by the Chief of Police with substantive revisions forwarded to the Senior Vice President for Administration & Finance and Chief Financial Officer.

POLICY/PROCEDURE

All animals are prohibited from being kept, harbored, or maintained in any Texas Tech University building with the exception of laboratory animals, animals used for teaching and research purposes, police K-9s, the recognized mascot (equine) of Texas Tech (in areas approved by the veterinarian of Texas Tech University), or certified therapy dogs in compliance with OP 61.46, Therapy Dog Sessions Within University Buildings. Service animals for persons with disabilities are permitted as long as they are in compliance with section 7 of OP 34.22, Establishing Reasonable Accommodation for Students with Disabilities.

Enforcement of this OP shall be the responsibility of the Texas Tech police. Any person who is found to be in violation of this policy shall immediately remove such animal from the building in question at the request of the Texas Tech police. Failure to comply with this request may result in appropriate disciplinary action.
