Characteristics  
   
Height: 15 - 25 feet tall
Foliage: alternate, deciduous, and simple with fine serrations

up to 2 inches long and usually on spurs
Flower: white, pink, red, or lavender umbels or corymb-like racemes (depending on cultivar)

on spurs before leaves for up to 3 weeks
Bloom Period: early Spring
Fruit: red, orange, or yellow pome up to 2 inches in diameter
Bark: smooth on young trees, flaky on older trees
   
Environment  
   
Sun: full sun for best flower development
Soil: best in well-drained soils that are slightly acidic

adaptable to many different soil conditions

many cultivars will do well in alkaline soils
