Personal Information
Dr. Drew Payne joined the faculty in the Department of Internal Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) in July 2016. He currently serves as an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and has held various key academic and clinical roles, including Vice Chair of the Internal Medicine Department and Director of the Internal Medicine Observer Program.Dr. Payne's research primarily focuses on patient health at the clinic level, with particular interest in preventive medicine and obesity medicine. He is actively involved in several research initiatives at TTUHSC, contributing significantly to the field of obesity medicine.
In addition to his research, Dr. Payne plays a vital role in medical education. He teaches resident physicians through his role as Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program and guides medical students as the 4th Year Clerkship Director. He also functions as an Academic Hospitalist and outpatient internist, providing both inpatient and outpatient care.
Originally from Amarillo, Texas, Dr. Payne has deep roots in the region. He completed a bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science from Texas Tech Health Sciences Center in Lubbock in 2006. He earned his Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine from A.T. Still Universitys Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2013, followed by an Internal Medicine residency at TTUHSC, which he completed in 2016. Dr. Payne is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine.
