Chair's Message
Things have certainly changed since the last newsletter. Oil prices have dropped, the rig count and graduating senior placement is at an all-time time low and we lost a beloved pillar of our Petroleum Engineering Department. In spite of all this bad news, things in the Bob L. Herd Department of Petroleum Engineering are looking up and are on the right path to success. I think Wink (Dr. Winkler) would be proud of what we are accomplishing. In my visits with him shortly before he passed, he continued to encourage me to mentor the undergraduates and to never forget to challenge them and get them to think critically. He also encouraged the use of the "Daily Quiz". Coincidentally, Wink and I both started our careers as Production Engineers in the Wasson Field in Denver City, Texas! Read more
What's New
Texas Tech University Oilfield Technology Center
The Bob L. Herd Department of Petroleum Engineering began construction in June 2016 on the Oilfield Technology Center (OTC) on the Texas Tech East Campus. Located on 10 acres of land near the intersection of East Loop 289 and fourth street in Lubbock, the facility is designed to serve as a research and teaching facility to give both undergraduate and graduate petroleum engineering students a hands-on experience in the design and operation of typical oilfield equipment. Department Overview "A View from My Window"

Petroleum Engineering at Texas Tech is alive and well! Two and half years (February 2014-October 2016) after moving into our new Terry Fuller Petroleum Engineering Research Building, the faculty, staff and students are settled into our new home. Most of all the "new bugs" are worked out! I have observed numerous changes over my tenue at TTU. Read more

Three New Faculty Members Join the Bob L. Herd Department of Petroleum Engineering

Dr. Steven Henderson's primary research interests are petrophysics and well log analysis of conventional and unconventional reservoirs. Dr. Sheldon Gorell's interests are in the areas of reservoir simulation and modeling. Dr. Ion Ispas' oil industry experience includes field operations, research, and management in petroleum engineering, geomechanics and chemical engineering. Read More

PETROLEUM ENGINEERING GRAD SCHOOL RANKED #9 IN NATION BY U.S. NEWS

The Bob L. Herd Department of Petroleum Engineering is ranked as one of the top 10 graduate schools for petroleum engineering in the nation. Each school's score reflects its average rating on a scale from 1 (marginal) to 5 (outstanding), based on a survey of academics at peer institutions. Read more

In Memorium

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Dr. Herald Winkler.  Dr. Winkler (Wink) passed away May 7th.  Dr. Winkler served as professor and chairman of petroleum engineering from 1970 to 1985 and remained active in the department until 2015.  He was a pioneer in the development of artificial lift in oil and gas operations throughout the world.
